Slackware 12.1 when?
 

I'm going to install a distro to my new computer, i used to use Slackware 2-3 years ago..But Slackware 12 seems a bit old..Does anyone know when 12.1 will be release?

As they say in alt.os.linux.slackware, when it's ready. :)
If seriously, Patrick seems to release a version once every six months. I don't see how Slackware 12.0 is old in any respect, since it's my main distro, but if you want, you can always try Slackware Current.

Slackware 12 isn't old. It has a high-end, new smp kernel and is fully updated. Go to the security updates section on slackware.com and update your unit to get new, cutting edge features. Slackware 12 was released in July, it is 5 months old.
Mr. V. knows when the next version of Slackware will be released. As always the next version will be released when it is ready.

Yeah, it hasn't seemed like a very long time at all since it came out. Maybe that's because i've been busy all fall. Hmm.

I have followed slackware through all current changes for the past six years. There hasn't been alot of things introduced into this current branch to really justify a whole new release I'd say. I think Pat is currently watching for a good stable X.org release and probably KDE 4 as well. I'd say there will be alot of action in the near future, and if it turns out well, then maybe expect a release. But like the others have already said, "when it's ready."

But really, it's coming, folks, it's coming. Looking at the current current, I imagine it'll be pretty cool one.

I see Pat has upgraded current to the 2.6.23.12 kernel which is awesome:-)
What makes you think it is coming soon? On January 2, 2008 Slack 12 will be 6 months old. The last two releases of Slackware have had 12 month release cycles. Have you heard that Pat is going back to a 6 month release cycle?
I think it'll be a little while yet. I can wait:-)

I think 12month releases suits slackware better.
Then there's really something new.
And it's easier to keep security updates on less versions, Pat is only human he can't do it himself there's no time for that if you got a family. ;)

I agree as to the stable X, but I think he'll hold out for KDE 4.1 as even the KDE 4.0 RCs look more like alphas right now.

And I must say that I prefer the 12 month cycle for Slackware releases.

It seems that Ubuntu and Fedora's release cycles are screwing up people's minds :). 6 months is fresh, especially compared with the release cycles of some non-Linux systems.

As far as I am concerned, twelve months is a sweet spot. Short enough to have fairly new software, long enough to do real work, rather than constantly upgrading.

As I have understood this, a version x.1/2 is released if there are major upgrades, like security issues or something. When it comes to KDE, I wouldn't be surprised if he waited (several) realeses before including KDE 4, and I do hope that is the case. Stability has always been a priority, and I don't believe KDE4 it's there yet. (Last time I checked). I actually think he will drop KDE 4 the next release and that he might include it in extra some time after this.

But hey, all this is speculations and is one of the great things about slackware. It's like we have surprice once a year (Thats pretty much better than x-mas, but thats another story ;). I love to wait for a new slackware release, and I'm happy he doesn't release a new version every 6 months. Then it would be like, "I don't feel like upgrade, theres a new release in just 6 months anyway". So I find it a bit odd that someone just cant wait for a new release. But thats probably my way of uprading. I (Rearly) use upgradepkg with new realeses, I prefer a clean install. I don't know why, but thats the way I like to do it. Its nice to clean the computer once in a while, and I'd hate to do it twice a year.

Impatient people could install the pkgtools out of current. Then in the output of

there is a first indicator of the next release ...

I hope there's not another slackware release for at least more 3 or 4 months.

Just as a note of caution it is a good a practice to upgrade applications as Slackware security updates are made available. Pat releases the Slackware security fixes for your applications to prevent you from being rooted by some bad-a$$ weirdo. I update my Slackware install as fixes are offered.

Oh sorry, I was a bit unclear there. When I have downloaded a new release, I rearly upgrade my existing slackware to the newer version, but I do a clean install. That was what I implyed. Security upgrades are of course importent ;)

Ah.....sorry, my mistake:-) I misunderstood your post. I do the same as you, I do a clean install whenever Pat releases a new version of Slack.

Not too long now...slackBuilds.org just recently shut down submissions for 12.0 since 12.1 is coming soon.
