Slackware 12.1 - restore KDE fonts
 

Hi,

I installed Slackware 12.1 on a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 laptop, after I spent some time recompiling 2.6.25.3 on it and configuring I ended up with a stable configuration so it was time to make it pretty. With that in mind I followed Daedra's on beautifing fonts on 12.1 and installed the packages she provided, copied fonts from XP install, ran mkfontdir, mkfontscale, fc-cache, added new font dir to xorg.conf and restarted X.
Here comes the nice part, all KDE fonts are GONE on every single application (from boot splash to amarok) I have pretty squares instead of letters :( .
Actions I took:

- deleted windows fonts, removed entry from xorg.conf, ran fc-cache (-rv, several times);
- deleted all contents of /tmp and /var/tmp;
- deleted user, added it again;
- added different user;
- reinstalled freetype,cairo and libXt;

None of my previous actions were able to bring the stupid fonts back, however when I started X from root, it seems to be all fine, it has ALL the fonts.
So, at the time of my post, I'm stuck with a Slackware 12.1 install that's usable only by root, any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm running out of ideas and I don't want to start the installation all over again.

Perhaps you've messed up your environment variables for the normal user.
If the fonts are usable by root, they're still in your system.

As always, before following someone's unofficial advice for Slackware ...

BACKUP!!!!!

"Works okay as root" usually indicates permissions issues. Check the font directories you mentioned for proper permissions.

So run as root until you solve the problem. No biggie. I often run KDE as root. Doesn't bother me a bit.

Yup, I was thinking of that in the shower this morning :) and it seems that I've managed to mess up the permissions of the fonts folder. Set them back and they're working now.
I know, always BACKUP and especially don't fiddle with your box at 2:00 AM, you might miss a few things :).

BTW, I am a guy... however you are not the first to make that mistake ;)
