Slackware 11.0 DHCP no detection anomaly FYI
FYI. I did a clean install of slackware 11.0 (having 10.0) on prior with no issues). In 3 attempts, I would never be able to get the internet connection. I would run netconfig but netconfig would never to the autodetect of my ethernet card like it did on slackware 10.0.
I found out that during the install, instead of 1)fdisk, then 2)setup (which is what I always did); I could run 1)fdisk, 2)network, 3)setup - THEN the autodetection would work. I have done this twice now. |
It might be because you installed one of the 2.6 kernels, then never installed the modules...That is a common reason for the nic/sound/video not working on a new install.

The netconfig command just blindly loads every available network driver until one succeeds. That is why this method works for you. Evidently the hotplug (udev) system is not capable of automatically loading the correct module. This happens from time to time.
Netconfig will create a file /etc/rc.d/rc.netdevice containing the appropriate modprobe command for your card. If that file "/etc/rc.d/rc.netdevice" exists and is executable, then Slackware will run it when the computer boots. Eric |
