slackware 10 - no virtual consoles

I'm running Slackware 10, and I am default runlevel 4, which is the KDE GUI login manager.

When I press Ctl-Alt-F2 (which should bring me to a new virtual console) I exit GUI mode and go to a blank screen. As I understand it, I should be getting a new login prompt, but I just get a blinking cursor in the upper left corner that does not respond to keyboard input. Pressing Alt-F7 brings me back to the GUI and I'm functional again.

Can someone give me an idea how to get the login prompt and multiple virtual consoles?

Thanks much,

Charlie Obert

never mind, I figured it out...

Sorry about that...

I figured it out by looking in /etc/inittab - apparently, in runlevel 4, the only virtual terminal spawned is tty6 - so ctl-alt-f6 gave me the login prompt I wanted.

Case closed.

Well, you have one Console at Ctrl-Alt-F6.

If you want other consoles, you will have to edit /etc/inittab.
Look for the respawn entries ... will look like

1:1235:respawn:...

insert a 4 between 3 and 5. Then init Q . Lo and behold Ctrl-Alt-F1 has a Console too.

This was discussed a few months ago... search LQ to find that thread.
