slackware 10 - no virtual consoles
I'm running Slackware 10, and I am default runlevel 4, which is the KDE GUI login manager.
When I press Ctl-Alt-F2 (which should bring me to a new virtual console) I exit GUI mode and go to a blank screen. As I understand it, I should be getting a new login prompt, but I just get a blinking cursor in the upper left corner that does not respond to keyboard input. Pressing Alt-F7 brings me back to the GUI and I'm functional again. Can someone give me an idea how to get the login prompt and multiple virtual consoles? Thanks much, Charlie Obert |
never mind, I figured it out...
Sorry about that...
I figured it out by looking in /etc/inittab - apparently, in runlevel 4, the only virtual terminal spawned is tty6 - so ctl-alt-f6 gave me the login prompt I wanted. Case closed. CO2 |
Well, you have one Console at Ctrl-Alt-F6.
If you want other consoles, you will have to edit /etc/inittab. Look for the respawn entries ... will look like 1:1235:respawn:... insert a 4 between 3 and 5. Then init Q . Lo and behold Ctrl-Alt-F1 has a Console too. This was discussed a few months ago... search LQ to find that thread. |
thank you
Wow, thanks for getting back to me so quickly! :)
