Slackware 10 -> My setup is NOT STABLE -- constantly freezes

Hi all,

Thanks to all the help here and the great resources available on the net, my Slackware 10 box is almost up and running exactly the way I want it.

The only problem I'm having is that it constantly freezes... I cannot move the mouse, and a red indicator light on my case stays constantly red (not sure if it's cpu or hdd).

I haven't done anything drastic. I basically followed Shilo's setup guide (neglecting to set up the mail server, or swaret). I'm using a stock Slackware 10 install.

I'm running Gnome.

In all cases where the freezing has taken place, Azureus has been running. I've never noticed the machine freeze while actually using it - only if I leave it unattended and come back.

I haven't really installed anything else, except for TightVNC server. I have attempted to get DCGUI and Nicotine working, but that's about it.

Anyone having the same problem? Advice? Recommendations? Thanks

This would be the harddisk.. It might be a failing harddisk; had this happening a couple of times myself.
You could take a look at the logfiles: /var/log/messages
and search for any error-messages. In the case of a failing harddisk, there should be messages about IDE-resetting and such..

good luck.

The videocard is a brand new Radeon 9200. (not pro, not se, not xt)

I'm just using the xorg drivers for it.

The machine itself was built probably around 5-6 years ago. I remember that the 600 MHz P3 in it was the fastest processor available at the time.

I'm not sure if the harddrive was part of the original build. I would really hate for it to die though. It is my trusty Seagate Barracuda

Here is the output from /var/log/messages:

Do you see anything suspicious about ide in there?

Edit: Almost forgot, I believe I rebooted at Aug 15 17:21:58 " azzurro syslogd 1.4.1: restart.". I don't know how long before then it was until the freezing occured.

Some interesting developments:

I was really hoping my hard drive wasn't to blame, so I performed a little unscientific test. I had totem play an xvid avi file for 2 straight days. Then, after not observing any crashes, I ran azureus, but downloaded to my brand-new harddrive that is running as a slave. Sure enough, the hard drive light was fixed on and the computer was completely frozen.

Unfortunately my test was rendered inadmissable because of some fucking script kiddies trying to break into my box.

Here's the relevant output of /var/log/messages leading up to and at the time of the crash:

Code:

All those logins sure as hell aren't from me. That test account I made but forgot to delete. It also has the most obvious password...

I realize that I need to secure my box better. It's actually on my to-do list... what I actually wanted to do was make it stable first. Could this be related to the stability issue I've been having? I don't think that it is.

I'm also going to post in the security forum and find out what kind of damage could have been done.

Thanks for any help.

Note: I rebooted here: Aug 20 17:49:38 azzurro kernel: klogd 1.4.1, log source = /proc/kmsg started.

1. It's not your HD. Linux won't crash if that happened.

2. Disable sshd, changes are, you don't need it. Use pkgtool > setup > daemons/servers/whatever it is to do that.

Linux can indeed crash with a failing hard drive,
especially if there are bad sectors or input/output
error from the swap partition. It's not invincible.

I have a feeling that you don't have DMA enabled
on your disks, which makes transfer rates
excruciatingly slow... Or perhaps your DMA
settings are too aggressive.

Try these commands to find out:

hdparm /dev/hda
hdparm -i /dev/hda
hdparm -tT /dev/hda

This will let you know the status of your hard drive
and whether it's being used to its full potential.

Sorry about not getting back sooner.

MDA: Yes, I do need SSH. I'm using it to tunnel through VNC.

Shade: I tried the commands and DMA is indeed on. I am typing this response from another computer (the crashing machine is not hooked up to the network at all while I determine if there was any damage caused by the security breach), so I will post the results once the machine gets on the net.

Is there any way to check if the hard disk is dying?

I will recap my experiences: I noticed that the machine was crashing. In all situations, Azureus was running. I did a quick, unscientific test: I ran totem, having it play an xvid-encoded file for 2 straight days. I chose this test because I know that decoding the file would chew up my entire cpu and put some stress on the machine. No crash.

Then I started up Azureus, and started downloading and seeding some big torrent files. Now, I just added a brand new Seagate harddrive to my machine, so instead of downloading to the older Seagate, I saved to the new one. Sure enough, it crashed.

Any help much appreciated.

Go to seagates website and download the hard disk diagnostics for your drive. use the tool to make a bootable floppy, boot to it, and test the drive.

azurro, try another bt program and see if it crashes, maybe it's java related... also Azureus is known to suck up a lot of ram ,maybe the light it's because it's using the swap which i assume it's on the old disk.

If there's a problem with your hard drive, it might have been caught by SMART. Make sure smart is turned on from your BIOS and try running (as root):

#smartctl -a /dev/hdx (of course substitute hdx with the actual drive)

It should be pretty clear if there are any problems.

Since you said that this only happens when you are not doing anything, look into APM problems, maybe in the BIOS setup. If you have options for APM checked, try unchecking them and see if that makes a difference.

I've got a similar problem, but it is not related to failing harddrives, thats for sure. Azureus freeze my system completely so I would suggest running the computer without Azureus for a couple of days and see if that helps.

I've tried Azureus with different java versions without any luck. My solution has been to run Azureus on my Windows computer, but I do not like it.

ATI's drivers lock me up on a regular basis. So that could be it.
