Slackware 10 configuration and documentation
 

Hello.

I'm running Slackware 10 on a Pentium 166mhz after some problems with bootdisks... and diskdrives...

I had to put the hd in another machine, install it there and then move the hd back to the Pentium 166.

I had some problems with mouse configurations because I had a PS2 mouse on the machine I used to install Slackware but I have a serial mouse on the P166.
After a lot of google search and a lot of reading (I found a lot of tips to emulate the third mouse button but few about changing mouse configuration) I finally managed to discover the 'mouseconfig' command. I felt so stupid... The command was so intuitive and I took such a long time to discover it. Anyway, at this time it's important to me to learn basic stuff (like accessing cd drives and disks, managing files...) in command line before doing other stuff (including X environment things).

Question 1:
I was quite sure there was a text file where the mouse configuration could be changed but I didn't find it.
How could I had done it without using the 'mouseconfig' command?

Q2:
I couldn't run XFree86Config for monitor related configuration! Was, XFree86Config substituted by xorgconfig in version 10?

Q3:
Is it my impression or it is, somehow, hard to find Slackware specific documentation?
I've looked at "Linux Complete Command Reference" for help but it is RedHat related...

Q4:
I would like to use the machine (P166, 8mb ram, 6gb hd, Slack 10) to write a monography.
I'd like to use a text editor on KDE but it takes ages starting... Is there a way of making KDE run lighter through configuration files? Should I use another window manager?

I'd appreciate your tips.

There are many lightweight window managers out there. Fluxbox, BlackBox, and Enlightenment are all great lightweight window managers.

I've got an old laptop (P133 96MB ram, 6GB HD) running Slackware 10 using XFCE as the window manager (which comes with Slack) - I've been pretty happy with it. Starts up pretty fast, not alot of bells and whistles... I THINK Xfce also comes with a simple text editor, but I'm not sure (not writing this on that machine ;) )

yeah, run xorgconfig.

i also recommend either fluxbox or, if you need more features, xfce.

/etc/rc.d/rc.gpm may be what you're looking for. Whenever you bump into something like that, just trace out the scripts - mouseconfig leads to /var/log/setup/setup.mouse which leads to several things including /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm.



Yeah - finding up-to-date docs is even harder. Everything is either Red Hat-like or a commercial distro based on Debian. As far as Slack, here's some random stuff of vary quality and getting older and older:

I haven't really examined some of that all that much. Best docs are in Pat's files and scripts and the man pages, themselves. And just random searching and taking what applies. And this forum.



Wow. I would think twm would stress that. 8MB RAM? Can you add more? Something like flux is fine on a P100/32MB. The point there is the editor and the data, not the desktop environment. I wouldn't even mess with X at all on that unless I had to do something specifically graphics-related.
