Slackware 10 amd64 and 2.6 kernel
Hi,
I am after a bit of confirmation and advice.
I have an Asus K8N-E Deluxe nForce3 motherboard with an Athlon64 3200+
and an NVIDIA GeFroce 4 Ti4800
I dont use either the raid or SATA on the board it has 2 IDE drivers connected.
I have quite a headache installing on this machine. A default install of Slackware with the 2.4.26 kernel is fine even after running swaret to upgrade to 'current'
However, trying to compile and install any 2.6 kernel I get various errors.
Usually the NIC gives up if I try to transfer a file over 1mb in size and only a reboot will bring it back. NETDEV WATCHDOG timeout in dmesg.
I did get around this problem and could transfer as many files of any size. But now when in Gnome, X freezes either after a little while of hardly any use or after about 10 secs of an AVI and uses 99% cpu - I can still ssh into the machine.
Now my query is, those people who have their machines running slackware fine on amd64 hardware and specifically this setup. What do their kernel config's look like.
Of specific interest - can you set the processor to K8/Hammer/Opteron etc without it becomming a 64bit kernel? Or do you just have to compile it as 486.
Also do you compile the on-CPU AGP for the AMD64.
As you may have guessed I just want a 32bit slackware system setup - I have dual boot with ubuntu amd64 to try out 64bit.
Any help would be gratefully received.

I compiled my kernel as an Athlon XP and haven't had any of the problems you mentioned. It will compile as a 32bit kernel.

I have started fresh again.
2.6.10 kernel with CPU as K7 Athlon
still having the same problems.
Cannot enable DMA on hda or hdb (I get a working from ReiserFS that DMA is not enabled)
dmesg shows :
Code:
Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx

NFORCE3-250: chipset revision 162
NFORCE3-250: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
NFORCE3-250: BIOS didn't set cable bits correctly. Enabling workaround.
NFORCE3-250: 0000:00:08.0 (rev a2) UDMA133 controller
NFORCE3-250: port 0x01f0 already claimed by ide0
NFORCE3-250: port 0x0170 already claimed by ide1
NFORCE3-250: neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)
This looks like it may be important; I checked with another Linux Machine (running UBUNTU) and it looks differend no failed entries and it has the chipset straitafter the "Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2" line
Not at home at the moment but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before I get home and do more digging

Let me get this right! You have a 64bit CPU and you want to install an 32bit OS!!! Don't you think it is a little waste here. Why not go for a 64bit Linux distro because there are a few out there that you can choose (Gentoo, Debian, Ubuntu, Novell SUSE, MandrakeLinux, and Fedora Core 3, just to name a few) UNLESS you have to have Slackware running on your machine...

I have resolved the IDE issue - it appears it was because they were compiled as modules.
However the network still fails and the X server is still and issue and there are no entires in Xorg.0.log syslog or dmesg to explain any of it.
As mentioned previously I know the hardware works apart from being fine in 2.4.26 on the command line I have WinXP Pro and Ubuntu (2.6.8.1-4-amd64-generic kernel ) running fine.
I think slackware is great, and I would love to get it working in 32bit on this hardware but it seems to be a lost cause. I have eliminated practically everything in the system as hardware glitch.
I am thinking now that I may have wasted enough time on it and will carry on with the 64bit Ubuntu just so I can get back to actually doing some work :P
I have set up the thread to mail me if any replies. If anyone has any ideas or has a similar problem let me know.
Here is the lspci -v for reference - if anyone wants the 2.6.10 or 2.6.9 kernel configs that I tried just drop me a line or reply in here.
