Slackware 10.2 with bareacpi.i kernel hangs on boot at hotplug detection

Hi,

I've just compiled a new 2.4.x kernel to enable acpi support for my Acer Aspire 3000 laptop.

The system booted up and ran with no problems with the bare.i kernel.

Now, with the new bareacpi.i kernel the system hangs at hotplug hardware detection. I have an external hard drive and a USB mouse connected. The system still hangs with either or both disconnected.

I am still able to boot using my old bare.i kernel. So i disabled hotplug and tried again with the bareacpi.i kernel. The system didn't hang but i was unable to start an x-session. (Something about no mouse input).

For reference I used this: (linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=345314) thread as a guide to enable acpi support. Everything went smoothly up until booting.

I need acpi support for battery and general laptop power information, so any help on getting over this "hang" with the bareacpi.i kernel would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks.

You might go to Kernel.org and pull down the 2.6.17.1 kernel (current stable) and try compling it. I've been using the 2.6 kernels for some time now and am quite happy with their stability and added functionality over 2.4.

Cheers

Thanks.

Just a follow up.

It seemed the bareacpi.i kernel didn't hang, but just took a VERY long time to boot up. Once I opened up an X session, everything was still very slow.

FIX: New kernel.

I'm now using the 2.6.17.1 kernel (after a few trial and error compiles) and everything running well. No idea what was wrong with the acpi support on the 2.4.x kernel.
