@ trey85stang,
GNOME was a lost cause for Slackware prior to the release of 10.1 and was dumped either the first or second update of -current after 10.1 was released.

@ carboncopy,
I've always considered -current to be the alpha, beta and RC of the pending release . Doesn't everybody?

Grabbing the 10.2 tree right now and will have a DVD by morning hopefully.

Great news. I can finally upgrade my servers. I needn't to recompile sendmail with sasl support further. And native posix threads support in glibc is a boon.
Unfortunately Pat didn't included my fixes to some small glitches in init scripts of sysvinit and tcpip packages.

is it safe to upgrade kernel using slapt-get
from slack 10.1 to 10.2

and which packages should not be excluded during upgrade to slack 10.2
default exclude list:
EXCLUDE=^kernel-.*,^alsa-.*,^glibc.*,.*-[0-9]dl$,^devs$,^udev$,aaa_elflibs,x86_64

Isn't there an official DVD?

The loss of gnome isn't much of an issue for me. I must say though, I'm pretty happy to see KDE 3.4.2 included. I can't get enough of that eye candy. My wife is actually kinda excited about this one too. She has recently seen the light and now refuses to use Windows unless it's absolutely necessary.

For me, I'd have preferred GNOME to be included, because I was using some of the apps (like gnome-cd and sometimes gedit) but I can get by using other things.

Edit: been downloading the first two ISOs via BT since this morning .

i just heard that 10.2 is released, so i came on and edited my /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc file so that it points to the 10.2 location isntead of 10.1, and slapt is currently upgrading me to 10.2
Code:
SOURCE=ftp://slackware.mirrors.tds.net/pub/slackware/slackware-10.2/
is the line i edited (changed a 1 to a 2, i wish M$ was this easy)
That's good news for me. I just installed 10.1 (my first Slack), so I don't feel like burning anymore ISOs. However, now that I know more about what I need, I might just do a clean reinstall and not install a bunch of stuff I don't need (ALSA, etc.)

Go Slack!

Gnome was cut, eh?

How does this affect upgrading a Slackware 10.1 install with gnome to Slackware 10.2?
My little bro needs gnome unfortunately, and an automatic upgrade would be much preferable to manually applying all the security updates since 10.1.

No. There are a couple of repositories which offer DVD's but they're unofficial. The two I know about build on Sunday and I don't like to wait so I build my own.

On GNOME, I see Patrick's reasoning behind dropping it. He wasn't ready to move Slackware to kernel 2.6, which later versions of GNOME require due to HAL and DBus, and it requires a great deal of time and effort to get right. With three projects-Dropline, GWare and GSB-Freerock- dedicated to providing GNOME to Slackware users, Patrick can put that time and effort in to other areas of Slackware.
I've been using Dropline since Slackware 9.1 so Patrick's decision to drop GNOME has had no effect on me or my system.

CD 2 contains linux-2.6.13, kde, kdei, and t(tex). If you already have KDE 3.4.2(and qt) and have no use for the other packages, I don't see a need to grab cd2.

Just did a full update (minus kernel and alsa) via Swaret to 10.2. Nice, bit nippier which is good.

But had to do:

mknod /dev/dsp0 c 14 3
mknod /dev/mixer0 c 14 3
chmod 777 /dev/dsp*
chmod 777 /dev/mixer*
chown root:audio /dev/dsp0
chown root:audio /dev/mixer0
ln -s /dev/dsp0 /dev/dsp
ln -s /dev/mixer0 /dev/mixer

to get sound on a few things running sweet (audacity for one).

EDIT:
Scrap that, I just rebooted and lost /dev/dsp again....

Its a Udev and kernel 2.6 issue. I have chmod'd /etc/rc.d/rc.udev 644 until I can come up with a more robust solution....

But apart from that yay! 10.2!!
