Slackware 10.2 no network access

Ok... I just installed Slackware 10.2 on my big machine:

Athlon XP 2100+
ASUS A7V8X motherboard
512MB ram...

(should be enough)

Anyway, I can't seem to get the network working. My motherboard uses a broadcom tigon3 chip (I'm guessing it's a chip) for ethernet and it's worked before on 9.1. The weird thing is that the module is loaded (tg3), there are no iptable rules, the interface (eth0) is up with an IP address (I set mine to static) and I can't ping anything except myself. I can't ping the other computers on my network or the router... much less the internet.

DHCP didn't work either. I would just see my MAC address on the screen for a bit and it'd give up and I'd end up without an IP address.

A similar thing happened with my other computer (it used a crappy 10mbit DEC chip using the tulip driver.) Static IP didn't work so I switched to DHCP.. which didn't work, then when I switched back to static, something happened and now it magically works. I've had no luck with my other machine as of yet. Some of that IBM magic pixie dust would be real helpful right about now.

I'm lost guys, can anybody help me?

Hi redjokerx, what is the output from the following.

lspci -v

ifconfig -a

route -n

good luck.

jimdaworm 09-21-2005 02:53 PM

Are you sure the module is loaded?? according to everything I could find you need a module called "bcm5700"

I'm pretty sure it's tg3 cuz that's what it was before. And if it were bcm5700, shouldn't I not have an interface?

 lots of things to write down since the other computer doesn't have a network access :) Oh well.. time to see if the USB flash stuff works.

Looks like I might want to try the bcm module...

ifconfig -a (this is with my static IP)
Code:

route -n
Code:

so there you go

(Nice thing about linux is that you can easily copy paste your system specs if you had no clue. WIth windows (as far as I know), I'd be giving you guys a screen shot.)

redjokerx 09-21-2005 04:44 PM

I might've done something stupid... I didn't enable 10/100 on the network drivers option when I was compiling 2.6.13 ... then again, default kernel didn't work either.

Peacedog 09-21-2005 05:42 PM

I'm not sure which driver this is (tg3 or bcm5700) but it should be the correct one. It's from the asus website for the motherboard you have.

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

good luck.

redjokerx 09-21-2005 05:58 PM

with tg3 selected as a module, the system loads it automatically and gives me eth0... If I unload tg3, eth0 disappears... so I think it's the right one.

sorry for the wide page.. must be all the printouts..

Peacedog 09-21-2005 06:04 PM

Well ifconfig and route look alright. Are there any firewalls in place? What does the following produce?

iptables -L

Have you checked all the hardware, cables, etc.?

good luck.

redjokerx 09-21-2005 08:17 PM

iptables -L says all INPUT OUTPUT and FORWARD are accepted.

I can get internet on windows so the hardware is fine... I might reset the router later.

comcipher 09-21-2005 11:03 PM

I think there may be some kind of problem w/ 10.2. I'm not exactly a pro at the whole thing, but I know myself and others have been having the same problem with the network connection not working. I used to have 10.0 installed and it worked just fine, but after installing 10.2 (clean) it won't connect. I think netconfig is suposed to probe for ethernet cards at some point, but it doesn't seem to. this is another thread where a guy couldn't seem to get it working either.

redjokerx 09-21-2005 11:45 PM

yup, we've been screwed :(

What could possibly go wrong? a messed up library or option or something? because everything seems correct.

What's your hardware btw comcpiher?

Oh and Peacedog, I tried to compile the bcm driver from the link you sent me... it seems old and I get compile errors.

redjokerx 09-22-2005 03:52 AM

UPDATE: I've...
reset router
switched cables around
tried kernel 2.6.13.2
tg3 as a module and compiled in
with and without iptables
compiled b44 (broadcom 4400 10/100) and mii( some generic 10/100 interface)

and had no luck.

redjokerx 09-22-2005 04:23 AM

http://www.broadcom.com/docs/driver_...nux-8.2.18.zip

just installed that driver, it loads correctly but still no luck. iptables is still off

comcipher 09-22-2005 11:05 AM

Here is my hardware setup:

ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard
3.00 Ghz P4 w/ HT
1 Gig RAM (2x 512)
40 Gig IDE hard drive
80 Gig IDE hard drive
250 Gig SATA hard drive (still can't get it to work in linux yet, even with the 2.6 kernel)
ATI Raedon 9800 Pro 128 Mb video card
Kingston EtheRx KNE111TX ethernet card
Lite-On Ethernet card

The ethernet adapter i'm trying to get to work is onboard the motherboard, but it still shows up in the devices detected in linux. I even tried the cord in the other cards and none of them worked either. Hopefully somebody can find a way to fix this. Perhaps there is a way to use the older netconfig program? Was anything even changed in it?

EDIT: I also tried upgrading to the 2.6 kernel, with no success on the network problem or the SATA problem.

redjokerx 09-22-2005 05:36 PM

uh... give us your lspci -v and lsmod outputs. It might be something trivial that you overlooked. Also, why do you need so many network cards?
