Slackware 10.2 and the nvidia kernel module
Hi all,
Did a fresh install of slackware 10.2, installed the latest nvidia driver, upgraded to KDE 3.5.1, then upgraded the kernel from 2.4.31 to 2.6.16.1. Then the xorg.conf wouldnt load (im guessing because its using "nvidia" and not "nv") so i tried to reinstall the same nvidia driver, it goes through the motions, not finding a kernel at the nvidia site etc, then i get
Code:
unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module
Dont know if this matters, im using a laptop, the card is a geforce4 go 64mb.
What am i doing wrong?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Slackware 10.2 and the nvidia kernel module
Hi Dave,
I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I have had exactly the same experience in the last couple of days. I have a slackware-current box that has linux-2.6.15.5 on it. I d/led 2.6.16.1, moved .config in from the 2.6.15.5, did a 'make oldconfig', choosing the defaults for the new options, compiled it, booted it in console mode, d/led the newest nvidia package, ran it & got the same message you did. I tried the new nvidia driver package with 2.6.15.5 & it worked fine. I've gone as far as I can go, so I'll have to wait until someone else figures out what is happening.
Regards,
Bill

You need patch from nvidia for 2.6.16 kernel. You will find it on http://nvnews.net/ site. Search in forum.

I confirm that I recently went from 2.6.14.6 to 2.6.16 and after patching the Nvidia '8178' driver package, it installed correctly.

2.6.16.1 and nvidia 8176
Thanks for the replies, folks. I, too, patched the nvidia code & am using it in 2.6.16.1 now. I really do appreciate all the help I get from this board.

Bill
