Slackware 10.1 X Video issues....

OK, so Ive searched this site for resolutions to my problem, but no avail. if you know of a previous thread that has my answers, please point me in the right direction.

So Ive installed 10.1 on an older machine. all works well except X does not like my onboard Intel i810 video chip. I have run xorgsetup (which yields a config that gives me scrambled video) and also have run xorgconfig. After correctly putting in my monitor refresh rates and using the #15 driver for my X setup, I still get scrambled video in X. The windows also get partially drawn if drawn at all. Does anyone have any clues for me. Ive tried just about all I can figure

Right now Im using the VESA driver at 800x600, but it sucks pretty bad.

Thanks,
Dave

ps. I have a screenshot if anyone is interested.

VESA should support up to 1024x768, but I think it also only addresses 1mb of memory. It could also be your monitor.

In any event, have you tried lowering the default bit depth to 16 bits? Or even 8 bits? That should allow you to have a higher resolution.

Ive actually tried almost all res and bit depth combinations. All produce the same garbled video when using the i810 driver.

I have the i810 as well, and I also set all the values correct in xorg.conf and had the exact same problem your having.... I came to the conclusion that the card is unsupported by slackware. I don't know for sure, but then I installed RH9 and it worked like a charm.... its strange. so I have to use RH9 on that box:rolleyes:

yes, all other distros I have used seemed to work just fine with the card. I just prefer slackware. So i wish I could figure this damn thing out. Still tweaking though...

my i810 works perfectly in all forms of suse and in slack 10. but slack 10.1 is a definate problem for me too. i've tried several different configs...and i've upgraded xorg from 6.8.1 to 6.8.2 which *seems* to help, but i'm still less than impressed, so still searching for the answer...

So Ive installed Xorg 6.8.2 and all seems well now. I guess it was just a bug. Thanks for the help all.

xorg 6.8.2 made a difference for me, but i didn't have nearly the problem you show in your screenshot. i've still got a little tweaking to do before i'm comfortable with it...but then again, for me linux seems to be all about tweaking.
glad it worked for ya :)
