Same thing here. How do I know whether the system uses ACPI or APM?

dmesg will give you that info

If you use APM, try modprobe apm module
(and add it in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules eventually)

you can edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file and uncomment the line
/sbin/modprobe apm like below...

#### APM support ###
# APM is a BIOS specification for saving power using several different
# techniques. This is mostly useful for battery powered laptops.
/sbin/modprobe apm

reboot, and from now on when you type halt -n it will shut down completely

Hi!

I was facing the same problem. I newly recompiled kernel 2.6.12.3 and it wouldn't completely shut down. I tried all suggestions above and none worked. I then ran across this site and i recompiled my kernel to use ACPI Support. ( i'm not sure whether it was turned off by default or was it disabled by me )
I haven't done emerge and setup as the site suggested, but it worked fine.
I can now run 'shutdown -h 0' to completely shut down my pc.

Hope you get it working..

Choose bare.acpi when installing slack on newer x86 as this has acpi already compiled in.

boot: bare.acpi

Actually, it's called bareacpi.i

Thanks gbonvehi. I stand corrected I haven't installed slack in a while. And slack is once installed, there's no looking back. It's quite stable. You just have to watch out for the updates. And the install is like a passing breeze that I forgot what took place. It only took me 20 mins with all the packages installed. The only time I install slack is when there's a new release. I love this distro!
