Slackware 10.1 setup freezes when selecting root pswd

Hey all, I'm trying to install Slackware 10.1 (firsttime slack) and I've gotten almost all they way through setup. I said YES to set a root password and it left the setup menu and went to the black space under the menu. It said type in a password and hit enter.

It won't respond at all now. I tried typing a password but it is just staring at me with a blinking cursor. No keys I push do anything. The keyboard has been working fine all the way through setup, so any ideas on what the problem is?

thanks for any suggestions. I'll start over if I have to but I don't want to hit this problem again (and I would really like to set the root password).

Addi

don't set a root password during installation. you won't be vulnerable for long, don't worry.

as soon as you boot into your system login as root and type passwd.
it'll prompt you to enter a new password. it ALMOST makes it not matter that the installer hangs.

I don't mean to sound stupid, but are you sure it froze and isn't simply not moving the cursor? the default action for passwd is to not move the cursor while typing in the password...

if it just plain fails, but you still want to be secure while booting with no password, just make sure that the rc.ssh service is not enabled. you can enable it later pretty easily, if you need. just "chmod a+x /etc/rc.d/rc.ssh"

yeah, it actually froze. I tried typing a new password in anyway and hitting enter, but nothing. no keys had any effect at all.

i just turned the machine off and started over again. I did what DaWallace said and just skipped it during install and set it once it was up and running and it all worked fine.
