Slackware 10.1 and a serious font problem
Hey all and tnx in advance for your help.
well the problem is like that I've used until recently slackware 10.0, and I'm using some forign font (hebrew) and every thing work fine. but recently I decided to reinstall my system because it was really dirty, shit load of libs and progs compile with source (it more like a testing machine) without any control. I decided to upgrade to 10.1 on the way to make sure all the software is up to date but as soon as I finish installing it I relize that I can see the hebrew fonts. I've double check that I've install all the necessary packages and I do rememberd that I've check all the right tickboxes but still nothing. now let me be more specific, I've install kde with international support and the hebrew package for kde, when runing the config of the kde I add hebrew and all hebrew letters are represented as squars. on any web browser (konquerere and firefox) hebrew letter are represented as squars and have small 4 small numbers and letters (I'm guessing its there map code) but no letters. I've reinstall the system from scratch and made a full install just to make sure I've haven't missed a package with the same result.I've tryed to install hebrew fonts with no help. the bigest problem that I have is that with slackware 10.0 the support was native( at least for web browsing) but now nothing!!! I've been fighting with that for 2 days now and I'm stating to have a big headake... I can set up apache, sendmail and samba and more for big oganization but I can't handle the XFree86 font problem... errr... help will be most apprichiated c0m4. |

IIRC, the Bitstream fonts which ship with Slackware and are the fonts being used by default and do not contain Hebrew characters - you'll need to use something like Arial/ Times New Roman or a Hebrew specific font, and change your KDE settings to tell it to use the new font. |

the installation is a new installation, not an upgrade and then I have followed the hebrew howto both for the vconsol and for the X. I'm curious about the font issue that you mention because as I said before in slack 10.0 I had support... any way the font that I have listed are varient of Bitstream serif san courier and a few other but no arial or new times roman. I really don't understand fonts basic, so I might be talking gibrish... but that might be interesting, I have a few more distros installed which does support hebrew(suse 9.2) and I've copy the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/* to my slack distro and made sure that all the font path are in the xorg.conf but no luck there either... if you need more info just ask.. tnx |
I did some more research and the suse distro that I run uses both for the kde and the webfonts san serif if its help

maybe this file can help you....
/usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs/Hebrew-HOWTO if you have installed the doc.'s, it should be on your system. egag |
tnx egag, but as I mention I already gone through it...
any way I have install some ms core fonts arial and times new roman but as ttf but I can seem to choose them on the kde config or the web browser |
Yeahaaaa.!!!
tnx all, the problem is solved! I was missing a directory in the xorg.conf, I don't know how I didn't spot it before. |
