I was wondering if you kind folks could clarify this for me.

--same-owner
--preserve-permissions

When root creates a tarball using -zcvf the above two items are indeed part of the tarball's properties, correct?

I ask this as Slackware's manual page does not mention if they are/not the default. I've been searching online, some pages have show that the --preserve-permissions implies --same-owner, and that the --preserve-permissions option is enabled by default for user root.

Those online manpages are for gnu/tar versions older than Slackware, and hence my lack of clarity on the matter.

The info pages do not mention anything regarding this as well.

Lastly, does Slackware's tar back up 'xattr' info? Does a normal home user desktop/laptop user need worry about that? Isn't xattr info being used by KDE to tag metadata?

same-owner and preserve-permissions flags apply at extraction time. You don't have to worry about them on the create.
They are both default settings when tar is run by superuser to extract files.

xattrs/acl support is a RedHat vendor extension and isn't included in the stock GNU/tar as shipped by Slackware.


I thought KDE metadata was all being put into that nepomuk/akonadi database, but I'm not an expert, so I may be wrong.


Slackware doesn't use 'SELINUX contexts', 'acls' or 'capabilities' as yet, so you should be fine for now (assuming I'm right about KDE), but it's something to bear in mind for the future as the linux world seems to be going down that road in general. I currently do my daily user home-dir backups using GNU/tar listed-incremental backups, so this is something I'm keeping in mind too.
