Slackpkg upgrade to xorg 1.4.2 and ATI drivers
Hello Everyone,
I generally use slackpkg to keep up to date with the changelogs. I know there is another thread regarding this topic, but that thread is primarily dealing with the effects of upgrading on Nvidia drivers. My laptop has ATI and I have the proprietory drivers installed. According to a post by Alien Bob in that thread, this upgrade is going to affect ATI drivers as well. My question is simply this: since this upgrade is only security related (no change in xorg performance), and I use this laptop for personal use only, is there any good reason to upgrade? I have my graphics just how I like them and don't really want to create an unecessary problem for myself. If anyone has done the upgrade with ATI drivers, I would love to hear your experience to see what will have to do to keep things as I have them. The "fix" seems to be re-installing the drivers, but I would just like to head off anything unexpected. Thanks for any replies. Bob |
since it is just a laptop for personal use and you don't run a server or ssh you are probably safe to exclude it in /etc/slapt-get/*
i will say this though, i use the nvidia driver and ANYTIME you do anything to X or the kernel (install, rebuild or upgrade) ALWAYS uninstall the video driver FIRST! then you can reinstall the ati or nvidia driver afterwards... |
Thanks, Okie...I suspected that that would be the advice. The only thing I use ssh for is connecting to my desktop on my home network. I like to keep up to date, but I have always been a little skiddish about updates involving xorg.
Thanks again Bob |
I upgraded the xorg packages and forgot to, actually never thought to upgrade my drivers. Everything seemed to work fine. But for good measure I did rebuild my drivers.
