slackmirror.cbpf.br

Does anyone know what happened to slackmirror.cbpf.br ?

To retrieve old Current64 packages such as grub-2.02-x86_64.4.txz (current is grub-2.02-x86_64.5.txz) I used to access http://slackmirror.cbpf.br/pub/slackware/ but that site seems to be down for quite some time now ...

:(

It is a Brazilian federal research center https://portal.cbpf.br/pt-br/
I sent an e-mail to the admin and it isn't up to him to put the content online,
it seems that it will be offline for some time.

I have a "cumulative mirror" of Slackware64-current at home. Created long ago by downloading the content from slackmirror.cbpf.br and then installing a local cron script that keeps updating my local mirror with new Slackware64-current stuff without deleting old stuff.

Basically it is everything that ever went into 64bit Slackware since its inception - 10 years of packages.

By now that equals to a total of 143 GB of data and I have no room on an online server to upload this much data.
I am negotiating with a friend to see if I can host taper.alienbase.nl on a bigger VM and thereby gain the space needed to make this mirror available.
Who knows...

Perhaps this is something I can host on the slackware.uk server?
I currently have in excess of 850GB of free space on the server, so hosting ~150GB isn't going to cause problems.

Let me know if you're interested - feel free to PM me on IRC to discuss.

And I'll be more then happy to mirror it on mirrors.slackware.bg too.

btw Eric, any chance you are keeping the same for 'multilib' ?

The upload to my server has completed over night, so I should have it publicly accessible pretty soon - you're welcome to mirror it via rsync once it's available.

I'll be keeping it up to date on the server with syncs from the main tree into the archive one, so there shouldn't be anything that needs doing on your end bar a simple mirror.

Yes, I'd be interested in that too.

If anyone has any cumulative trees like this, it might be something I want to host; so drop me a message. Also if people want to see something archived in this way, just let me know and I can start doing it - but it obviously wouldn't have the history, unless someone has a copy of it all.

AlienBOB has a cumulative tree of multilib, which we will bring to the same location shortly :)

Yahoo small business offers 500 gig on the hosting and 500 gig a month on data usage. service. I use it for my personal ftp 75 dollars a year.

For a personal site that is perfectly OK, but for instance my bear.alienbase.nl mirror was used to download 84 TB in the last 12 months. You would have to pay a lot extra for those 7 TB per month probably.

I doubt very much you can do public file hosting on a service such as Yahoo Business, but I'm willing to be corrected :)

That being said, you can get a storage VPS with 500gig for less than $75/year - and you'd have full root access to it, AND be able to put an http server on it to host files.

But storage VPSs (or 'storage' services such as Yahoo Business) aren't the solution - they usually come with limited bandwidth and little CPU/RAM allocation.

I use such a storage VPS for backing up projects hosted on slackware.uk, but could never use that VPS to provide public access.

Also, most people who provide hosting/mirroring services to the Open Source community do it on a volunteer basis, so using paid services isn't really an option.

Luckily I was able to secure a few sponsors to maintain the servers for slackware.uk, and receive a few small donations for the extra expenses (such as the backup VPS, domain names, etc.) incurred. I consider myself very lucky to have the support I do.

I guess the $4.98 US a month plan with unlimited everything would be nice. You can do what ever you want with that space. Takes a 5 year contract.
It is your domain they care less. But may not meet the needs of many I guess.
