Slackerware 13 Internet Error

i know i've been all over the board tonight with my setup questions. but my last major one for the night is getting my internet working. i'm currently connected to my linksys router via an ethernet cable not wireless. i run netconfig, i don't have a host name so i just use my computer name, for domain name i put tampabay.rr.com, then i chose DHCP as it's what i'm running. i finish the wizard and it says basic network config complete. i go to configure network settings, and it trys to detect my current platform, but then gives me the error "could not parse the XML file ()" i've googled all over for it and can't find it even mentioned. hope someone out there has dealt with this.

More information might be helpful...what are you using to "configure network settings", for example?

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

You can take a look at 'Configuring your network in Slackware'.

BTW, the domain name you are using is not a valid name.

Code:
~#whois tampabay.rr.com

Whois Server Version 2.0

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

No match for "TAMPABAY.RR.COM".
>>> Last update of whois database: Sun, 18 Oct 2009 04:34:07 UTC <<<
You can take a look at the above link. If you have more problems then post back.

The above link and others can be found at 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!

That looks like you're trying to do it in KDE. That is a known issue.

Drop back to the command line, and configure it there.

Cheers.

A quick fix would be something like:

$ ifconfig eth0 up
$ dhcpcd eth0

Where eth0 is the network device interface. If this works for you, edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and under the eth0 config make sure it looks like this:

# Config information for eth0:
IPADDR[0]=""
NETMASK[0]=""
USE_DHCP[0]="yes"
DHCP_HOSTNAME[0]=""

Now when you start up Slack, /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 should get run and automatically connect.

see it's that computer voodoo that really bothers me. i had another issue and just reinstalled slackware, filled all the settings out the exact same as i did before. only this time i opened firefox and it worked right away. no logical explanation.. but hell i'm happy it works!

It was probably just a matter of you trying to use eth0 instead of eth1 or something like that...
