i know i've been all over the board tonight with my setup questions. but my last major one for the night is getting my internet working. i'm currently connected to my linksys router via an ethernet cable not wireless. i run netconfig, i don't have a host name so i just use my computer name, for domain name i put tampabay.rr.com, then i chose DHCP as it's what i'm running. i finish the wizard and it says basic network config complete. i go to configure network settings, and it trys to detect my current platform, but then gives me the error "could not parse the XML file ()" i've googled all over for it and can't find it even mentioned. hope someone out there has dealt with this.
BTW, the domain name you are using is not a valid name.
Code:
~#whois tampabay.rr.com
Whois Server Version 2.0
Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.
No match for "TAMPABAY.RR.COM".

Where eth0 is the network device interface. If this works for you, edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and under the eth0 config make sure it looks like this:
# Config information for eth0:
IPADDR[0]=""
NETMASK[0]=""
USE_DHCP[0]="yes"
DHCP_HOSTNAME[0]=""
Now when you start up Slack, /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 should get run and automatically connect.
see it's that computer voodoo that really bothers me. i had another issue and just reinstalled slackware, filled all the settings out the exact same as i did before. only this time i opened firefox and it worked right away. no logical explanation.. but hell i'm happy it works!
