Slack11.0 - compiled 2.6.19.1 kernel doesn't work on T43

Hello everyone.
I am a newbie of linux. And I installed Slackware 11.0 on my laptop - Thinkpad T43.
The first thing I did after installation was trying to make my kernel in date so I downloaded the newest 2.6.19.1-kernel from the famous 'kernel.org',and...

1. Since I have little knowledge about config the kernel, so I chose to use the default settings with one or two tweaks.(a lot of warnings appeared *maybe not 'a lot of', tens, not hundreds* during the process)

2. I just ran 'make bzImage', 'make modules', 'make modules_install', and placed bzImage and System.map to proper place, backup 2.4.x.x kernel for fear the newer one would not work (and it really doesn't!)

3. I edited lilo.conf and update lilo

4. reboot, in lilo, I chose to boot the new kernel. BUT THE SCREEN THEN KEPT BLACK AND THE LED OF CAPITAL LOCK KEEP FLASHING. I had to turn off power by pressing the power button for about 4 secs, and luckily I have backed up the old kernel otherwise I won't have the chance to look for help here.

So, what is wrong? Thanks anyways.
I have no clue since no output could be seen.

Sorry for double posting since nothing happened after I pressed the "EDIT" button...

Just now I download another kernel-2.6.18.1, and used a 2.6.18.0 .config file from someone else.
I did everything I have stated a little bit earlier again after answering the config questions half-randomly.
Reboot. Chose 2.6.18.1 kernel, and, it works. Now my laptop can make sound and manages battery better although the network card disappears.

So, it seems that the cause of booting failure of 2.6.19.1 kernel is that I have not config the kernel properly, right? Could you please tell me some hints or good references about how to customize kernel configuration especially for Thinkpad laptop?

one more word, sorry for my poor English. Maybe I should have worded everything better.

Personally, I like this Gentoo wiki:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Compile_a_Kernel_Manually

It gives you advice on what to select during configuration.
