Slack10 + Asus A7B8X-X mobo = no sound

I just recently installed slackware 10 on my system, I have a Asus A7B8X-X motherboard with onboard sound (via82xx).

When I try to play audio, such as an mp3 through XMMS I hear no audio, and receive no errors. Ive tried both ALSA and OSS settings in XMMS.. no luck.

I also tried other programs, mpg123, anx xine - no audio as well.

I ran alsaconfig as root, and it detected my onboard sound - but i still have no audio.

LSMod outputs:

mixer settings

Number one thing, CHECK YOUR MIXER SETTINGS. I've seen a lot of posts with this problem. I know when I did my default install of slack 10, I also did not get any sound. Do alsamixer, set your levels, then as root, do an 'alsactl store' to save those levels between boot times. More often than not, your channels are muted or set at a 0 level.

Also if you are using KDE you are going to need to change your mixer settings inside KDE (use Aumixer or something of that nature) and then save the settings in control center along with the check box to load volume settings on boot.

Are you getting a weird buzzing noise when you turn your speakers up?

Do you use KDE ? If yes, have you other desktop/window manager installed like gnome or fluxbox to compare ?

No, I get no loud buzzing noise when I turn the speakers up.

And no, i dont use a gui - the machine is monitorless, keyboardless, and mouseless. Its a standalone box for file storage, game serving, and potentially media serving to a TV provided sound starts working..

One more thing you can check out, is the cable plugged in to the right hole? Speaker outputs are green, usually. (Sounds painfully obvious, and before you get offended, this HAS happened to me before.)

You might try using:

# amixer set Master 100 unmute
# amixer set PCM 100 unmute
