Slack10.1
Just read on LinuxPackages.net that Slackware 10.1 will be released soon. Isn't this release a bit quick or am I mistaken.

Considering the fact pkgtool is still buggy .... yes ;-)
However I think 10.0 is almost 6 month old, so I think the timing is not that bad, as SuSE just released 9.2,Mandrake released some new version I think, FreeBSD is going to release 5.3, Open and NetBSD too had some new releases. It is true that there were no huge version jumps, but there are some important security patches included. So I think you can safely bring out a bugfix-release.
[EDIT:] I think we will see 10.1 after Firefox 1.0 is officially released which is scheduled for November 9th.

it would be too early for a stable release right now, and AFAIK 10.1 is NOT going to be released anytime soon...
it makes sense to wait at least another month or so after the release of linux 2.4.28, so that things can settle down really nice and slackware 10.1 can be the best slackware ever... there's still work to be done, and judging from the changelog, things are going very well...
there's even talk about patrick doing a couple release candidates before the stable release, which is something new to slackware and shows how much patrick wants 10.1 to be super-smooth...

There is no information about the possible release date and the distribution has yet to enter a new beta testing cycle, so the final release might still be a few months off.

I was suprised at the news myself, but then realised that there have been a lot of updates in current, so it may be time for a new release.

you always have the option of upgrading your box to slackware-current if you want to be on the bleeding edge...
=)
also, you can download slackware-current install cds if you want... i think they are built once a week:
ftp://ftp.slackware.no/pub/linux/ISO...ent-ISO-build/
or you can easily make your own slackware-current install cds...

any security updates needed by a slackware release are available in the "patches" directory... it wouldn't make sense if you needed to upgrade to slackware-current to be secure...
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...ches/packages/
you can easily make your own bugfix release by replacing the packages on the install cds with the latest patched versions...
PS: slackware 10.1 will be the last slackware release to be based on linux 2.4... it has to be memorable!! we can't rush these kinda historical releases! remember that linux 2.4.28 (feature freeze) is still in the rc1 stage... firefox is NOT gonna determine when 10.1 gets launched...

according to an email I had from Pat, 10.1 will be released very soon. You can pre-order it from the slackware store already.

1) I know that you can download the patches without much trouble, but still it just "feels" better if you have to download as few patches as possible.
2) I have no idea when 2.4.28 will be final, but I am sure 10.1 will not be released _before_ Firefox 1.0 comes out.

exactly, which is why it's so convenient to make your own updated cd...

judging by the (small) size of the changelog for -rc1, i'd say VERY soon, like maybe less than a month... but only marcelo knows...

yeah, that's a fair assumption... i also assume it won't be released before linux 2.4.28...

Yup the day slackware.org says "10.1 Released!" will count as the day 10.1 is released

I'm surprised only in that I thought he might wait until he's happy enough with 2.6.x to make it the default. Also, I can't imagine he's ready to dump Gnome completely yet - if that's even still on the table.
Since I run current, I pretty much have 10.1 already anyway.
