slack vs rh

hey guys im an intermediate linux user, and im running rh 7.2 as a webserver/ftp server, but ive been thinking about switching to slack because i wanted a breath of fresh air, my question is does slackware come with atleast gcc and glibc? Also why do you recomend slack over other linux distros...thanks

MasterC 05-05-2003 02:09 PM

Yes, most of your distros will contain those 2 specific apps. Slack definitely since it's all about the source.

Why recommend slack?
Easier startup script editing, know what your system is doing at all times, know how to stop it from doing whatever it's doing, know exactly how to start what it's doing, know why things are done this way...

List goes on, basically know what's going on.

Cool

thanks alot, dling the slack 9.0 iso rite now, in terms of speed, how is it compared to other distros?

contrasutra 05-05-2003 03:15 PM

I find it to be the fasted Linux distro ive tried. Ive tried Mandrake, RH, and Debian, and Slack is the fastest (especially after recompiling the kernel). Of course, this is subjective, and it may run slower for you.

The only faster thing ive tried, is FreeBSD 5, which runs super fast.

Well, it's been kind of like "once you've tried Slack...you'll never go back". :) At least for me anyway. IMO, it's the easiest distro to customize, the fastest, most stable, most versatile that I've tried thus far.

I agree with everybody else. w00t!

Sorry, just wanted to say w00t!

Slackware is just more fun. It's the closest thing we all have to pure UNIX

As far as other options that you may want to try, take a look at LFS and Gentoo. Most of Slack's speed comes from the fact that everything is very transparent, so it's easy to make sure that nothing that shouldn't be running, is. Both LFS and Gentoo have this property, with the additional benefits of having been specifically compiled on your system, thus taking advantage of whatever optimizations are available.

Don't get me wrong, I love Slack, but if you're in the mood to try out different distros, you should be looking at Gentoo and LFS as well. Install all three, and you'll know a lot more about GNU/Linux, you will have killed a ton of time, and you'll probably have made up your mind about your favorite distro. :)

I'm a bit curious about Slackware too.. I've just downloaded a CD (is it only one CD? I could not find anything more ). Does it supports rpm's or even has any sort of apt-get? Or is purely from source? :) I'm a bit afraid of try it once I am not even sure if I've got the right iso image... :)

MasterC 05-28-2003 08:03 AM

Yep just 1 if you download it. There is the "extra" directory on your mirrors for the "extra" packages, but for the download iso, just 1.

Cool

Check this out, also.

Of course, on this subforum you will not find any bad things about Slackware :)
