slack vs other distro, running services

taking slackware out for a test drive, after using rh9 and fc2-4

most general ... what is a linux thing vs a distro thing?
i used chkconfig and ntsysv to manipulate services in rh/fc.
same in slackware?

how do i determine if a service, like samba is running?
something like ... ps -aux | grep smbd ?

thanks in advance

not you don't use "chkconfig and ntsysv" in slackware. it uses inetd rather than xinetd. and the rc scripts all live in /etc/rc.d/ - similar to BSD type OSes.

try

ps -ef|grep -i smb

althought i belive there is a utility called 'smbstatus' that checks the status of the deamon.

there is on hp-ux anyway......
