Question slack.update 10.2 -> 'Current' [ Needing Help ]

I used Kslackcheck to download all 'current' packages from a slack. mirror (slackware.au). When I completed my downloading I booted up Xfce and opened up Xpkgtool to update my system. Updating was smooth...the aftermath wasn't. I ran into a couple of problems, 1)No sound ~ When KDE starts up it has a error box saying that /dev/dsp (something like that) won't open...(tried alsamixer (wouldn't open), tried alsaconf (nothing), tried 'stuff' in XMMS (nothing). 2)No active internet connection (I connect to the internet through dhcp (ADSL router ~ LAN Card). Other problems consisted of missing libs, etc (Sendmail wouldn't start up during boot), Firefox wouldn't open...etc. And yes I have tried using Swaret (doesn't work for me). Could someone please give me a set of guide lines to follow when updating, like what to update first etc, my time at my computer is limited (school, work, etc.) I would greatly appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

You should really read the ChangeLog before updating...
1) Sound problem is probably because you updated alsa* packages, you've to keep the one that's compiled specifically for the kernel you're using.
2) I don't know, I'm not at current right now and I can't think of a problem for it.
3) Read the ChangeLog probably some libraries were added and -current programs are compiled against it. Go to: http://slackware.com/changelog/current.php?cpu=i386 and search for "Added" and see which libraries were added (when you upgrade, most "automagic" updaters don't check for added libraries).

Exactly

This forum is FULL of posts like this one.
If they read the changelogs first, and not "automatically" update........
