Slack on laptop
Hi guys...
I've been using SuSE for ages and now tried to install Slack on my Thinkpad 770 (which went smooth) ... X is working and I quite content with the speed of Slack 8 on my box. Just I can't figure out to set the machine up for use with the network (both at home and at work). At work I'm using a D-Link PCMCIA card that worked with the tulip driver in Redhat (yes, tried that too, didn't like it though) and DHCP. At home IBM TokenRing 16/4 PCMCIA which worked fine in SuSE 7.0 (I really liked SuSE but can't get it for a reasonable price in NZ) with a fixed IP. Welp, that's it in brief, I have NO idea what to put in which configuration file :) (in other words I'm a spoiled long-time SuSE user :} (since version 4)) Any hints appreciated, even a RTFM (if it includes name & location of the FM) Cheers, Tink |
Tink,
Welcome to the world of Slack! :) I just finished installing Slack 8.0 on my laptop (Gateway PIII@650) and am using a Xircom PCMCIA NIC. With the 2.2.19 kernel, I believe the tulip_cb driver was being used. It worked every other boot with my NIC. I've since upgraded to kernel 2.4.18 and am using the xircom_cb driver. Here's a HOWTO which gives a brief rundown on setting up a PCMCIA NIC: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Laptop-HOWTO.html There is also the PCMCIA HOWTO on the same site. On Slack, the primary PCMCIA directory is /etc/pcmcia - the file network.opts has the settings for the network adapter. Good luck! j. |
Hi j.
The PCMCIA-Howto did the trick for me :) I "just" had to modify the network.opts file according to my needs, and now my eth0 at work runs smooth, with DHCP and all. Curious to find how it will behave with the TokenRing at home ;) Cheers, Tink |
