Slack 9.0 SCSI recompile problems

I have a Dell Poweredge 650 that I have Slack 9.0 running on with the default adaptec.s kernel. I am wanting to put shorewall on this machine, but it requires the iproute package compiled in to function.

I have tried to recompile the 2.4.20 that came with 9.0 without success. I have tried compiling 2.4.21 and 2.4.22 without any success. No matter what kernel I attempt I get a kernel panic.

I have done this with other ide boxes, but never with a scsi. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

after compiling kernel add the initrd.img from the cd in the scsi section to ur /boot directory and add a line in ur new lilo.conf or grub.conf of the initrd img if i am not mistaken

Doesn't work. I would really like to know if anybody has successfully installed a new kernel with Slack 9.0 on a Dell Poweredge with scsi.

I am getting a "ds : no socket drivers loaded" error, which is my understanding that it has to do with PCMCIA. This is a rack mount server unit. There are no PCMCIA devices in it and I have turned off PCMCIA support everywhere I can find it in the kernel. If I'm wrong, please show me the error of my ways.

I'm having to start from scratch already (is there any right time to do a 'make mrproper') after blowing away all of my modules. As you can tell I'm grasping at straws here.
