Slack 8.0 on an SGI 320
Hi all, i am tryign to install Slack 8.0 on an SGI 320 workstation. I was wondering if anyone knows where to DL/has an iso of slak 8.0. I am not sure what newer kernels work with the 320, but i have slack 9 installed and the machine will not boot up, so i am guessing its a kernel thing, because i read some documentation about that stuff.
so if anyone has information about these questions, please help me out here, i really want to see what kind of performance i can get outta this 320 in linux, running a dual processor config....thanks to everyone who answers this post! |
I don't know about the dual CPU thing, but are you absolutely, 100% sure that your installation of Slackware 9.0 went well? A lot of thing can go wrong besides the kernel...
This being said, you can download Slackware 8.0 from most of the mirrors that are listed on the Slackware web site itself. |
Slackware Mirrors
You can always download from the Slackware Mirrors. Choose the folder of the version you want. There are several ones in the US, take your pic...
http://www.slackware.com/getslack/ I worked in a computer recycling place for a while and we had some SGI workstations in but unfortunately they didn't have processors or hard drives :-( I really wanted to try linux on them! I'd like to know how you get on, let us have a post with how it went! munkeh |
"Monkey", this is not a SGI workstation, it's a 320, which is nothing more than an expensive (but cool-looking) PC with the SGI logo slapped on it... :D
SGI Workstation were based on the MIPS architecture, and, as far as I know, there is no Slackware distribution for these CPUs... |
munkeh confused
LOL Guess my experiment wouldn't of got very far then...
|
actually thats not completely correct....
here is a link to a google search on the installiation on an SGI 320 VISUAL WORKSTATION, which was developed in 98 or so using a dual CPU Intel chipset, that runs windows. Linux has been run on them b4 as you can see onthe site, redhat, and slack both run, but only older versions, i would like to get the newer versions to run correctly f i could, because i have heard that the new 2.6.0 kernel has support for the graphics chipset, and numerous other small thigns that have been problamatic in the past. The mips arch actually runs linux as well, here is a link on another google search that shows that debian will run on MIPS processors. i have heard of origin 200's running linux, and they are a 4P MIPS arch machine. Also some Indy's. There is not a HOWTO out ther ethat describes this, cause no one in there right mind would want to buy a new SGI Tezro, Octane2, or Fuel and install linux on a 20-40k machine, thats insane. So once these machines become old and obsolete like the Indy's and Origin 200's these machines will probably find someone trying to instal linux on one for shits and giggles. The reason that i asked about an iso is because i will take forever to dl all the files in the 8.0 folder on any http pr ftp mirror, and its just earier to start dling an iso and forget about it till its done, and then go from there, i dont want the hassle of having to mget from ftp or right click and save every single fiel needed for installiation....now if i am doing this completely worng someone please let me know, as i would liike to knwo the correct way to dl from a mirror, but i have tried everything i could to get the whole dir to dl in one shot but it doesnt seem to work, it only saves a file with the html of the webpage that the dir links too.... i hope i helped to clear some things up, hopefully someone can help me out with these questions. TIA |
Yeah thanks, it did.
If I was on US soil, I'd post you a Slackware 8.1 CD, but getting post across that pond takes forever... |
thanks!! i understand what you mean, would take quite a long time...
|
as far as I know the 8.1 iso is on the slaware mirrors, or do you really need the 8.0 cd? I am pretty sure there is a slackware manual (of the 'brick' variety) that has an 8.0 disk on that you can usual get in bargain bookshops pretty cheap...
|
Yep, a good mirror should have all the recent and not-so-recent iso images...
|
If nothing else, you can select multiple files for download at once from an ftp server with a good gui ftp program, like gftp for Linux or FileZilla for Windows. Just use the shift key to select two files and every file in between, or the control key to select multiple files one at a time.
|
ok, i dont have a gui FTP program, but i am gonna look for a shareware one, thanks for the tip...
|
Both the one for Linux and the one for Windows that I mentioned are GPL programs, so one of them should be suitable for you (unless you're running BeOS or something :-)
