Slack 14.1, sound configured okay, no audio output

This is a new install of 14.1 on Lenovo hardware. Sound devices like so:

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC662 rev3 Analog [ALC662 rev3 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

When I play an audio file, the system thinks it's working:

$ aplay -D plughw:1,0 alarm.oga
Playing raw data 'alarm.oga' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono

but I get no audio output. I know this has come up before but I didn't see any clear solution. Any ideas?

thanks!

I just had a similar problem so I opened alsamixer and turned the volume up on all the outputs and unmuted everything and found that my sound was coming from the front channel instead of master, pcm, or headphone. Don't know if thats your problem but figured I throw it out there.

I wondered about that myself. I have turned up everything except the headphone line, which won't budge off of 0. I wonder if that's my problem.

I just found this harry after doing a search for alc662 and slackware 14. It's for 13.37 but maybe worth a try. The guy has the same chipset as you.

See allend's post there is a listing for a lenovo laptop --> lenovo-101e Lenovo laptop

You may need to supply a model option to the snd-hda-intel kernel module.
Create a file /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf with a line like this.
Code:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Possible models for the ALC662 can be found in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt

many said that fixed their problems.

Well it was worth a shot. I made that conf file and rebooted, no change. I wonder if this card is some new revision that needs some specific workaround.

If I was you I would go to this list and try all the modules listed under 66x, its a little tedious but it might work. https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documenta...dio-Models.txt

Maybe tedious but better than buying a new sound card for a brand new computer. Thanks, I'll try it.

I found this too on an ubuntu forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=803343

these options might be of interest as well as the ones in the other document

ALC662/663
3stack-dig 3-stack (2-channel) with SPDIF
3stack-6ch 3-stack (6-channel)
3stack-6ch-dig 3-stack (6-channel) with SPDIF
6stack-dig 6-stack with SPDIF
lenovo-101e Lenovo laptop
eeepc-p701 ASUS Eeepc P701
eeepc-ep20 ASUS Eeepc EP20
m51va ASUS M51VA
g71v ASUS G71V
h13 ASUS H13
g50v ASUS G50V
auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

one guy down mid page fixed his by changing it to options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo

Thanks for all your help guys, but no luck. I've tried all those models, no change.

So what's the best sound card to buy for linux these days? Are there any that are known to work 100%?

I believe it just a matter of setting the default output port.
Note that by default, card0 is an HDMI output port. You probably are not listening to the audio through HDMI, so you want your system to see card1 (an analogue output, ie, your computer's speakers) to be the default.

Create a ~/.asoundrc file and put this into it:

Code:
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.timer.card 1

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
device 0
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
device 0
}

pcm.dsp {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmix"
I don't know, you may have to reboot or re login or something; I don't recall when it kicks in, but try that and you should be good.

As to which laptop to buy, may I just say that System76 is ... amazing? top quality laptops, full Linux compatibility. Also I've heard good things about ZaReason.

LMAO! Dude I want some of that shit your smoking, you should change your name to HarryStoned Naw but I do that all the time. I just started using "alsactl store" to make sure it saves the config. But I'm glad you got it fixed and don't have to shell out the extra cash.
