I don't know if this will help but...

Since kernel 2.6.32 you can change the resolution editing the /etc/lilo.conf and put in the 'append', the option 'video=VGA-1:640x480'

I've just run into the same problem with my installation of Slackware 13.1 on Thinkpad R31. I tried passing "acpi=off" to the kernel and there the login prompt appeared.
If you can't use the blank screen to edit and update lilo, try blind mount an USB key, copy the file lilo.conf there, and edit it in another OS / computer. After that, blind copy it back to /etc/ and run lilo. Then reboot.
Hope this helps some others.

Or you can use the installation disk 1, mount the partition with the / directory, and chroot into the installation. It might be necessary to also mount /proc, and /boot or /etc depending on how your partitions are set up.
