Slack 11 will not install.

Hi,

downloaded Slack 11.0, checked MD5sum, correct, burned iso image to disk...all okay.

Changed boot order to boot from CD...

Restarted PC...Searching for boot from CDRom...nope.

Boot from my current installation on hda2, Slack 10.2.

Any ideas.

thanks in adavance,
TamTam

Open up the CD, does it have a file that ends in
Code:

.iso
? If it does, you have burned it incorrectly.

Check http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO for burning info.

BCarey 10-04-2006 05:05 PM

How did you burn the image? It has happened to me in the past that I have downloaded an iso image and burned it with k3b as a data cd/dvd project rather than selecting "burn cd image" from the tools menu. This burns an unbootable iso image containing a file containing a bootable iso image.

Brian

tamtam 10-04-2006 05:17 PM

Doesnot contain file .iso.

Burned as iso image, like I have done previously on numerous occasions.

It wont recognise the disc as bootable and boots from lilo.conf.

Downloaded from mirrors, now trying download from torrents. Will burn the first cd to disc and then try again.

tamtam 10-04-2006 05:22 PM

Downloaded on windows, burned with ISO recorder. Guess I may have a new coaster here. Anyway, will try again tommorow night, torrents still downloading.

raska 10-04-2006 05:24 PM

Pretty weird...
I downloaded all of them iso images from this mirror. I intalled from the DVD and everything went just fine, burnt it with k3b on a BackTrack live CD, my former Slackware 10.2 had been unpartitioned some weeks ago for hardware RAID-0 purposes with my gaming rig. I haven't burn the CD images yet, but I will in order to install them on a couple of machines at the office without DVD.

BCarey 10-04-2006 05:29 PM

I know it doesn't really answer your question, but if you are just trying to upgrade slackware you don't need a bootable cd. If you can mount it, just follow the directions in UPGRADE.TXT.

BitT4.04 DL of Slkwr; HUNG my LT @ 99.9% >15 min, max CPU, no Turn off. POWER only

Was DL of Slackware 11.0 from Linuxtracker, when at 99.9% 0:00 remaining, it caused hang on my LT, mouse response very slow, took my over 15 minutes to verify that work in my few open tabs was complete. CTL-Alt-Del would not bring up TM so I could check processes. Download later in BtT allowed my CPU fan to slow down, but still running @ 2.13 Ghz. Normal TurnOff failed to work 4x, so I hit the power button. Not sure if BtT, Linux track or slackware. Just beware. LOGGING OFF

I am having the same weird problem. The computer will not recognize the cd as bootable. I've tried the DVD and cd-rom versions. I can put in the 10.2 cdrom and it will boot to the boot prompt than I switch the cd out and put in the 11 cd and than hit enter and it complains it can't find the kernel, so than I can type in /boot/kernel/26huge/bzimage root=/dev/hda1 it takes off and boots up to my existing desktop.

I can take the same cdrom and disk and put it in a different computer and it will boot up like any other boot disk, no problems. Put the cdrom and disk back to the other machine and it will not boot. It will boot every other boot disk I have, including 10,10.1,10.2

so is there away from the boot: prompt to type in the command to boot up or install the 11. I don't want to do the upgrade. This really has me baffled.

If your computer's BIOS supports booting from a USB stick you can try the following:

Get the 37 MB file
Code:

/miniiso-pxe-usb-installers/usb/usbboot.img
from CD 5 or the DVD, or download it at http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac...sb/usbboot.img

Transfer the image to a usb stick using
Code:

dd if=usbboot.img of=/dev/sda
(if your USB stick is not /dev/sda, then supply the correct device name or you run the risk of erasing your SATA drive for instance).
Then, plug the USB stick into the computer, and leave the CDROM in the tray because that is where the packages are... and boot the PC, picking the USB stick in the boot selector menu.
The boot and installation process will be identical to what you'd see if you booted from a CDROM.

I don't have a usb stick - just need the commands from the boot: prompt that starts the cd to load slackware 11.

I can boot the kernels from the boot: prompt but it takes me to my existing desktop - need the slackware 11 desktop to get to the installer.

/boot/kernel/26huge/bzimage root=/dev/hda1

I am thinking that one has to change the root= part to point to the slackware 11 image.

I have never run into something like this. The cd and dvd are useable, just doesn't boot. I can boot other distros. I have done reburns at different speeds and different media even.

tamtam 10-05-2006 06:39 AM

Thought I was the only one with this problem. At work at the moment and the torrent downloads will have completed by now. Will try again once I get home.

Since I was going to do a completely new install anyway over 10.2, I may format the hd before attempting the install of 11.

I'm sorry but from what I understand you're giving the "root=" option at boot prompt ? If you're doing that... then stop and just enter "huge26.s" or "sata.i" or whatever kernel you wish to use for the install.

Well you cant use a 10.2 disk and try to boot a 11.0 disk due to the intrid is different from version to version. Have you verified your iso file with a mdsum check? Well try download the same iso from a different mirror site. Try using a floppy boot. Just throwing things out there

wolfden 10-05-2006 09:39 AM

I can take the cdrom and disk out of the computer I am trying to install it on and put it in another machine and it will boot the cd just fine. I put it back into the machine I want to install it into and it will not boot the cd. I can put other boot disks in and it will boot them. I can boot Sabayon, slackware 10, 10.1 and 10.2

I just redownloaded cd 1 from a different site and same story. I burnt iso's in windows and linux - doesn't seem to matter. This is a weirdest thing I have ever encountered.

/boot/kernel/26huge/bzimage root=/dev/hda1 will boot the cd to my existing desktop - I just can not get it to boot for install

nykey 10-05-2006 10:53 AM

So it won't but just huge26.s but if you enter the "root=" parameter with your current install it will boot it... have you tried using the other kernels ? Like "sata.i" or "test26.s" ?

tamtam 10-05-2006 12:49 PM

What Wolfden is trying to say is that it wont boot the cdrom or dvd he downloaded on his machine. I am Having exactly the same problem here. I now have 3 cd1 slack 11 downloaded by two different mirrors and a torrent and none of them are recognised as a bootable medium by my PC I use for Linux.

Like Wolfden I am trying to figure out a way of forcing the cd's to install using the bootable floppy from 10.2.

Wolfden whats your hardware and Bios revision.

Mine is AMD K6 processor, and bios AMIBIOS A5191MS v1.5 122799

2Gnu 10-05-2006 01:13 PM

I just tried the CD I got the first night with BitTorrent, and it booted fine. Burned with K3B.

I've been mounting the ISO files directly, so I hadn't tried to boot from the CDs until today.

nykey 10-05-2006 01:17 PM

I have Slack 11 too and it booted without any problems whatsoever. One of you two said that if he moves the cd-rom(writer) to another computer the disks are booting. Do both of the computers have the same BIOS or they are different. Post your BIOS on the non-working PC and on the working PC if different.

hosler 10-05-2006 01:19 PM

Make sure your setting up your BIOS settings right. Make your cdrom as the first boot device. Also, some computers require you press down a key during boot in order to boot from a cdrom. My latop makes me hold down the 'c' key.

number22 10-05-2006 01:29 PM

Download Slackware 11 iso from bittorrent; works fine.. I mean the disk is bootable.
now, let's check out the md5.

My test system is pretty old, pentium 133 classic, intel 440vx chipset.

I had scsi disk before; so I can put my cdrom drive to ide0 as /dev/hda; then choose to boot from cdrom in bios, because I had similar problem with another ide hard drive on this old system.

tamtam 10-05-2006 01:56 PM

Okay, we have tried everything suggested from the above. I have been installing OSes for a number of years on different PC's and never come accross this before...so I take it I know how to set the Bios up to boot from a cd drive :)

If you also read above both of us have tried downloads both from mirrors and bit torrent. How many coasters do you want us to have before were done.

The same PC is now booting a live distro of Kubunto. Then I will try Slack again, if not I will just go for the upgrade.txt option.

How do you report this is as a bug.

nykey 10-05-2006 02:05 PM

Send a mail to volkerdi [at] slackware [dot] com and as I've requested and you haven't answered, don't forget to mention your hardware on the working and non-working PC's especially the BIOS. There might be something with the CD's boot information that your BIOS'es don't understand, or something like that.

number22 10-05-2006 02:32 PM

There are two different kind of iso, one is created with bootable track, the other is created to pack an entire directory for easy burning cd without missing packages.

I made the same mistake many time before. It all depends how the person created this iso file.

Check the md5sum, it will be different from each other.

Alien Bob 10-05-2006 02:51 PM

If you have a floppy drive and a floppy, try copying
Code:

/isolinux/sbootmgr/sbootmgr.dsk
from CD#1 (or the DVD) to the floppy and boot from that floppy. In the boot menu which appears, select the CD as the next stage boot.
Read the /isolinux/sbootmgr/README.TXT for information about this "Smart Boot Manager" which is meant for exactly this kind of booting problem with the CDROM.

Eric

frik 10-05-2006 03:06 PM

I solved this problem with the "Smart boot manager" boot CD-ROM.
http://btmgr.sourceforge.net/about.html

tamtam 10-05-2006 03:26 PM

Okay copied to floppy sbootmgr.dsk...restarted and got the following...

Code:

Searching for boot record from floppy disc..OK

Remove discs or other media
Press any key to restart

Hit enter and then the same message appears again...

Removed CD from CD drive...same message

Removed floppy...starts installed Slackware 10.2 as usual.

One thing the floppy was formatted in FAT32, how do I reformat floppy to say
ext2 (or other) in linux, in case that was the problem...

Alien Bob 10-05-2006 03:44 PM

Quote:

If that was all you got with the floppy in the drive, then you did not create the floppy correctly. What you should see is a curses based screen with a boot menu that has the selections "quit to bios" "power off" "reboot" "floppy" harddisk" and "CD-ROM".
There, you should pick "CD-ROM".

Creating the bootable floppy -

In linux:
Code:

cat sbootmgr.dsk > /dev/fd0
In DOS:
Code:

RAWRITE sbootmgr.dsk A:
In a Windows DOS-box:
Code:

RAWRITENT sbootmgr.dsk A:
Eric

nykey 10-05-2006 03:48 PM

To format your floppy, boot into your existing Slackware 10.2 installation and use either Kfloppy (if you have KDE installed and make sure the user you're logged on is added to the 'floppy' group or it will not work) or use the command 'fdformat' (man fdformat) for more info.

aVast 4.7 NutcrackerFamily Virus/Worm kdei-18n-1 pa-3.5.4-noarch-1.tgz\opt

All my DL are while running M$xpPRO, as I have been unable to get 2915 WiFI (mini-PCI card) running on LT. Last night had problem as below. On Startup today in safe mode noted CPU went max, then slowed down {abnormal on SU for me}. Using various anti-virus I have scans were OK until Avast 4.7 0640.3 10/05/06 (Just updated) showed my recent DL of Slack 11.0 had 2 viruses in it! Due to filename length not sure if got it all correct. Virus in \0#4037696321, \0#109154491.
Linux is supposed to be virus free, so I suspect this is something caused by my DL w/ XP as O/S. Unwilling to restart BitTorrent 4.04 to finish DL, or allows others to utilize what I have (SEED?) as I might spread this crap. Slkwr 11.0 scan took LONG time, BtT DL info was last @99.9% 0:00 remaining. Still fairly new to BitTorrents, but thought I read it was beneficial to stay on as long as possible for others to use, not to Finish.

Anybody shed real good light on this problem? *!*MARA*!* Not sure if this is related to other migrators having boot problems. Or is this just a M$ app/ Linux incompatibility? avast was unable to move to virus chest. Move both if desired, TY d8d

OMG Thank You!!

I hope in the future they go back to the way they use to boot the cdrom

nykey 10-05-2006 05:54 PM

Well, for me and most people it is working the way it did before. I think it's something hardware related that you have this problems... maybe someone figures it out what's the root of the problem and let Pat know if it really is a (fixable) bug.

SyIwam 11-30-2006 02:46 PM

Hi All! I need help. I have a pentium 166 with Adaptec Scsi card. My first scsi hard disk drive is on the id 1 and my scsi cdrom is on id 3. I have make a boot disk with the kernel adaptec.s for installing Slackware 11 because my computer wan't boot from the cdrom.

When I boot with the floppy disk I have the prompt boot

I'm a new user of Linux.

How can I tell to load the cdrom to start the install of Slackware ? It's a new installation

Should I mount my cdrom ?

Thank you !

SyIwam

neocontrol 11-30-2006 05:08 PM

I have done the same. I downloaded slack 11, from my work, from different torrents, burnt the image w/ iso recorder. While in the boot up process I get a searching for cdrom boot record ...... none.

Also, I have tried this on different machines, w/ no luck. I can stick a fedora or red hat install in the same machine, and it comes up just fine.

Perhaps we need a boot disk or something, but I don't really know as it always has worked for me.
