Slack 11 has found me a mega bit !!

I've just installed Slackware 11 after using 10.2 for about a month. I have two boxes linked to an ADSL router going out to a MaxDsl (Brititsh Telecom adaptive 8Mbit max connection) onto the net, one with XPPro the other Slk 11. Previously Slack 10.2 wouldn't run a speed test hosted by adslguide.org.uk as there were problems with the version of JRE or summat. Anyway, Slack 11 browser will run this and here are the results:
------------------------------------------------------
WinXp box speed test: 1942.2 Kbit upstream, 375 down
Slack box 11 speed test 3056.8 Kbit upstream, 373 down.
------------------------------------------------------
This test is respected in the UK and the difference is noticable. Although my connection speed is touted as "up to 8MB dload" it is acknowledged that this is mostly unachievable due to line lengths etc. Anyway - nice one Patrick for finding me an extra MB !!!
Interesting isn't it ??

Cheers,

Umm sorry to break it to you but the OS you use isn't going to slow down your internet connection download/upload speed. Were they the same servers you used to test the speed?

Well I am glad you got an extra Meg but it isn't because of slackware

Yes - they were the same servers - I realize the OS won't make a difference to download speed - the post was meant to be tongue in cheek (i.e. humorous).
Thanks..

It can make a difference if one of the OS's is using the wrong MTU.
It is worth comparing ipconfig on XP with ifconfig on Slackware

there's some pretty nice tools over at speedguide.net that you can use to test your windows box. windows xp does need tweaks for the internet experience. vista will change that as it will calculate packet loss etc on the fly check out their wiki.
