slack 10, wine & turbotax
Hey folks,
I feel like a complete dork asking anather wine question as LQ is filled with them. But after search and reading some, I think I'm doing it right, but I can't get things going. I'm getting ready to do taxes. I used to install 98, do the taxes, and then format the drive, well, this year I'm trying to do it through wine (to avoid installing windows on general principle). Anyway, I downloaded wine-2005-01-11 from linuxpackages. Installed it and typed ' winecfg ' , it made a .wine directory, and a window came up asking some questions, and I went through all that just fine. I can type: ' wine /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe ' and install turbotax. It even makes an icon on my KDE desktop for it. BUT I get a C++ runtime error when I try to run it and it stops there. Do I need to get/install more .dll files or some other windows program(s)? Is there a better setup program for wine (although the setup seems fine, but the directory structure is a bit bare) ? Anyone get Turbotax working through wine? This is on a clean Slack 10 install. Thanks in advance -tw (p.s. this is my first attempt at wine besides dabling with it when I first started using linux, so go a bit slow if you don't mind :) ) [EDITED] Things are going down hill fast. Now I can't even finish the install of TT2004. It askes for the 2nd CD (state), starts that, but then tells me the 1st one wasn't finished. I might be going to plan B if this frustration keeps up. [EDITED] Please disregard this post. 5 hours of trying just to run 1 program for a week or so is my limit. Going to plan B. Maybe If I get some time down the road I'll play around with wine some more. Thanks anyway.. |
Use H&R Block on the web or visit the TurboTax user forum and search for Linux to find work arounds for the browser issue and do your taxes on the web.

sporks,
I have a lot of 'jazz' with my taxes. I was hoping to use the majority of my existing info. But thanks for the suggestion. -tw |
