Slack 10 how to configure the internet?

I just installed linux. linux sees my eth0 when i run ifconfig amd i have a cable modem connected to it. The cable modem connects to dhcp servers like it should as i know from using it on windows. I don't know how to set up my internet any more than netconfig which i set up for dhcp. nothing happens. for windows all i had to do was enable tcp on my nic and windows got my ip and everything. how do i set up my internet!? im lost

should happen at boot with hotplug but If it doesn't, make sure the module is loaded.
type in your console/xterm:

lsmod

to see which drivers are loaded and make sure the one for your card is in the list. If it is, run (as root):

dhcpcd

and see if it connects to your ISP. You may need to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules to include your specific NIC at boot time.

What kind of card is it?
also slack comes with mcedit which you will find much more friendly if you've never used vi before (vi is a very nice text editor but it takes some learning if you've never used it before).

alright post back when you find out. As root do:

lspci | more

to list all of your pci devices (if its onbaord your mobo it will still pick it up) to find out what kind of card it is.
