I gave it another go. this time with the 3.9 drivers and it worked.... but i still get lousy 3d accel. and yes I do enjoy FPS's like ET, Quake, UT.... we should DM sometime Nirv
Okay, quick question about performance, since I havn't tried using this yet:
When I use the ATI drivers with 2.6.5 and 2.6.6, if I exit x11, then my system freezes, completely. If I exit, the screen has white and black bars going across horizontally. If I try doing something like Ctrl+Alt+F2 or something, then the screen just goes black and stays that way. I have my AGP built into the kernel, and the only modules I have are r128 and radeon. Do I need to have a module just for agp?
i got all the steps done but when i got make.sh i get this error
/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/2.6.x/agpgart_be.c: In function `agp_generi c_alloc_page':
/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/2.6.x/agpgart_be.c:1405: error: structure h as no member named `count'

FOR ME ATI OFFICIAL DRIVERS (3.9.0) WORK FINE, but the problem is with playing movies(xine or mplayer) using XV and X11 driver is so shitty...(can't do fullscreen, only zoom and it is veeery slow). So using fglrx I play games and using the radeon driver I watch movies.
I have made a very simple script, which replaces /etx/X11/xorg.conf with xorg.conf.fglrx or xorg.conf.dri from backup. The problem is, that I have to restart X to apply changes(..ofcourse) and click "auto image adjust button on my LCD" and that is all....................
how did you folks get the patch to work? i am getting the error about line 16:
Code:
[23] root:/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod # patch -p1 <../ati-2.6.7-patch
patching file agpgart_be.c
patch: **** malformed patch at line 16:
[24] root:/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod #
and from where are you getting the patches? there seem to be a number of different patches -- do i still need one for AMD CPU, or is that fixed in the drivers by now?
About the errors regarding the patch I posted, I got it from http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3298 , and I posted the text from the file I saved it in, however it appears that the forum stuck in some extra line returns and such, so use the original version from the link above. This patch is only meant for 2.6.7 kernel users, and fixes the 'count' error Battousai is experiencing. To patch, type patch -p1 < [patch file name], or check man patch for more help. Last time I checked, ATI already merged the AMD patch with the new drivers, so that shouldn't be necessary. You may get something like:
Quote:
patching file agpgart_be.c
patching file firegl_public.c
Hunk #1 succeeded at 2057 (offset 47 lines).
patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line
Hunk #2 succeeded at 2111 with fuzz 1 (offset 59 lines)
from patch, but ignore the warning, it seems to work regardless.
thanks, i am running the 2.6.7 kernel, so i guess that's the patch to use. appreciate.
----------------------
okay, the patch worked like a charm, but then i get this:
- trying a sample load of the kernel module
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.7/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
failed.
and in dmesg:
fglrx: Unknown symbol have_cpuid_p
so that looks like something to do with the CPU after all -- the MTRR option? or do i maybe have to tweak the character device/video driver kernel options? i was pretty sure those were set right - could someone post what options they have?

TheRepublican, would be greatly appreciated if you wrote up a small HOW-TO and posted it somewhere. I know I'm about to try and get the driver install, would help if I could print something off and cross reference.
I had no problems whatsoever getting ATI's drivers to work with Slack10's standard kernel (2.4.26, or whatever it is in the 2.4.x branch). Just remember to run fglrxconfig when X is NOT running, and it should be fine.
Kristijan I have just submitted a tutorial at the appropriate section of LQ, and it will hopefully be posted soon.
This tutorial not only applies to slack, but many distros. Others who may be having trouble should look for it in the hardware section in the linux tutorials section of LQ.
Well, everything is running fine but for me apart from 3D games freeze a lot :( Just playing a game and - it'll randomly freeze - have to restart.
Running Slack10 with ATI 3.9.0 drivers on a P4 1.3Ghz with a Sapphire Radeon 9000, in Fluxbox. Looking around the forums doesn't seem a lot I can do realy - any suggestions :(?
