SL 13.0 and Broadcom BCM4318 PCI issue??

SL 13.0 or 13.1; PCI Broadcom card w/BCM4318 chip; i810 MB P-III 800mHz;
boots, finds and autoloads b43 and ssb modules; lsmod and lspci right on..
Invoking iwconfig, normal wlan0--great /but/ invoking ifconfig reports the
dreaded "SIOCSIFFLAGS No such", every try several times, etc.. Was it the
card?? Works fine XP and Puppy Slacko 5.3 live CD.. Mac looks good;
14e4:4318.. Searching Web hours reports the 4318 supported well; except for
me?? I tried compiling Broadcoms driver; no joy..What am I doing wrong?? Any
suggestions? TIA.. Hal

The secret is you probably need ssb.ko

There's some halfassed little bit of code which makes b43 devices on the usb bus appear on the pci bus, and it's hidden in 'Sonics Silicon Backplane'. You never see the option in menuconfig, but grep your kernel .config for

CONFIG_SSB_B43_PCI_BRIDGE

It should be there first, so I wrote a 'install' line for the b43 thing and never looked back.
