My apologies. I actually thought I had the latest version but in fact it is 4.10. Certainly I am saddened by this turn of events with "new and improved" once again having little gain and considerable loss, especially for those of us uninterested in "the bleeding edge". However I am thankful that LQ exists and creative people discover/devlop workarounds so that pulseaudio doesn't have to be a permanent infection.

For now I will simply use 4.10 until it ceases to function but do my homework so the transition is speedy.

I tried this, but there is no change in appearance.
Maybe the Qt theme requires some features from GTK3 themes.

With Adwaita theme it look normal and blue.

I did the build on a clean system wonder what I am doing wrong just seems not to capture my webcam. or the input. Oh I mean it loads.
but i did put together a build system that will help you build 32 bit 64 bit and multi lib.

Slackware 14.1 multi lib build you need to uninstall samba then create and install samba-compat32. do the multilib build then then unistall samba-compat32 and reinstall
samba-X86_64
I guess i will re-write the builds stuff like my MIXXX script I keep on the github. any way these both work great for me. Read the read me.


Building all the stuff on a X86_64 machine can be tricky. read the trouble shoot.

Pulseaudio built in this way, connects to whatever are the default ALSA input/output devices, and uses whatever volume settings have been set with alsamixer. So getting microphone to work may require some adjustments in alsamixer, if it wasn't already configured the right way.
As soon as ALSA's arecord hears the microphone, then Skype will hear it, too.

As for webcam's video stream, that is outside Pulseaudio's scope.

I am not disagreeing with you I am trying to figure out if this will work with "pulseaudio 5.0" in slackware64-14.1-multilib.
just trying to figure how to reproduce your out come. I have been unable to do so. yes the mic works on the microphone. in my build. but in a new system
fresh install I am unable to reproduce this. wonder what I am missing.

I used to do that too (with redhat/fedora, not slack), but a lot of programs (pulseaudio, xscreensaver and vlc for instance) are explicitly coded to NOT work if run as root.

ok used your build config. built it for compat32 and x86_64. the way I got mine to actually use that device. In th KDE DE chose my webcam as a default recording device. then for output in playback left that default. only way I got pulse to read default defices. without a .asoundrc was to.

edit my /etc/pulse/default.pa is to uncomment the bottm lines and add these so the bottom lines look like this.

and like you said wjaguar it will work just fine. want to thank you for your patients. this saves me much work.

building the compat32 pulseaudio built in the 64bit I had to uninstall samba it keep grabbing the wrong one.

For Yet Another Recipe for skype in multilib, see http://darlo.selfip.org/multilibskype/. The description there includes building & use of both 64bit and compat32 versions of the necessary prerequisites (including pulseaudio & pavucontrol) so may appear to involve more than is absolutely necessary. However it should leave your system in a coherent state wrt the various packages and it has worked on at least one system other than my own.

Maybe not really usefull, but who knows.
Last hours i helped a friend to got his microphone working. Fresh installed Slack 14.1,
with KDE. Made all like posted before, started skype, microphe works. After reboot, microphone didn't work. Only open the pulse volume control, closed it, all works. After reboot, none.
Then i remembered the setting in kde to start with an empty session, not start with the last session.
All went ok. Maybe ten reboots, microphone still working. Don't know why, but it seems that was it.

This will be entirely anecdotal so YMMV but with Skype 4.10 and zero pulseaudio installed when I first launch Skype my microphone will not work.

If I go into Options > Sound Devices and set the correct (for me) USB Microphone to anything else, apply, and then set it back to USB Microphone, and apply, it will work until I close and reopen skype again later and must do it again.

I post this here because it seems a basic problem with Skype and may be worth a try on other versions and microphones.

well I have not seen 4.10 yet for linux. but I wonder how it read a device like usb if it is unable to read alsa.
without pulseaudio installed.
I guess that is 4.1.0 or ok so 4.3.0.37 is the latest linux edition. ow well I can even sign in with your version.

Geeez my apologies again, this time, thankfully for only a typo but a serious one.

My exact version of Skype is 4.1.0.20. It's older, obviously, but it works and w/o pulseaudio. I see no reason to "upgrade".
