Running Zenwalk which is kernel 2.6.22.9 - al light version of Slack using Slack file structure, something I like best. For a couple of years, I've messed around with CUPS and LPRng, but I'm annoyed with the occasional network environment complications that these impose. For example, even the "direct" printers in CUPS (from 'lpinfo') nevertheless require the CUPS installation with the associated permissions, etc., an updated /etc/hosts file, or hosts.lpd, whatever. I want a straightforward spooler or spooler daemon for my /dev/lp0 parport standalone non-networked HP1100, using say, ppdev, one of my ppd files, and ghostscript or foomatic, so that it prints anything according to /etc/printcap. A gui is a bonus. No more running lpd after changing a seemingly unrelated network file and seeing "cannot connect to server", etc. Straightforward. Any ideas?

Reason: clarity
Bruce, your apparent objection about my post categorizing is noted; perhaps you think it was helpful to object, rather than to respond, to the question. As you know, Zenwalk is based on Slack, and Zenwalk has CUPS bloatware by default, so it's logical to seek a solution based on the underlying Slackware, which is what I am doing here. That is, the issue has not so far been accomplished in the Zenwalk forum where I continue to receive plenty of unsolicited CUPS advice. CUPS advice. Again, I have no interest in CUPS and Slackware expertise is likely relevant. Further, I consider a potential Slackware solution, or a forum discussion of one, as possibly userful or interesting to other Slackware users looking at simple non-network (eg. no CUPS, no LPrng) printing solutions on a parport without CUPS. I can only say that some things don't fall into neat categories, apparently, but perhaps you will nevertheless seek revenge or become an avenging railer or banning moderator. Whatever.
I remain all ears (or eyes) for a /dev/lp0 non-network spooler solution. Since you've "never had that problem in Slackware", what do you use? If you use CUPS, you might apply your considerable categorizing powers and exclude yourself from answering since I'm looking for a non-CUPS solution, unless you know of a way to use CUPS without its inherent http, permissions, security, etc, directly via /dev/lp0. That might be interesting and worthy of discussion in whatever taxonomical bracket you want to place it. Many thanks.
