Silicon Image Sli 3112 SATA controler Kernel 2.6

I have a Silicon Image Sli 3112 SATA controller on an Abit nf7-s 2.0 motherboard as a primary hard drive controller. The controller works fine with the slackware 10 installer under kernel 2.4 but when I try to compile kernel 2.6, I start to run into problems. There is a kernel option for the controller and the kernel option for the ide interface but when I try to boot the kernel, I get the error saying that it is unable to mount root device. On a side note, under kernel 2.4, the hdd was hdg for some reason (skipping hde and hdf). Any help you could give would me most appreciated!
