side thumb mouse buttons on intellimouse Slack10

Whle there is another thread located here, but that is so long that I doubt anybody will want to sift through it to help me.

I have an intellimouse 3.0 ps2. I have tried for a few hours to get the two thumb buttons working to no avail. I'm using imwheel, Slackware 10.0 with KDE

here are my current settings.

xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

    Identifier	"Mouse1"
    Driver	"mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
    Option "Buttons" "7"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
imwheelrc
Code:
".*"
, Thumb1, Alt_L|KP_Left
, Thumb2, Alt_L|KP_Right
xinitrc.kde
Code:
# Start the window manager:
xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"
imwheel -k -f -b "450089"
startkde
The README for IMWheel is located
here , for reference.

Does anybody understand the number index system for the mousewheel buttons and such? I am too confused to make sense of them

Also for my imwheel I use the following to get thumb button to switch tabs in Mozilla (with tabbed extensions) and other side button to go back:

"Mozilla$"
None, Left, Control_L|Page_Down
None, Right, Alt_R|Left

"Konqueror$"
None, Left, Control_L|bracketright
None, Right, Alt_L|Left

I could go for some coffee right about now.

No cigar on the mouse thumb buttons, although I only restarted KDE. should I completely restart x? Or am I still not configured correctly?

I know it is possible to get them working, because one of my attempts did have the thumb buttons working as the mousewheel properties but the mousewheel was messed up too.

Make sure it is not running under your root account and not giving your user account data. As root type:

imwheel -k -q

Then restart it as your regular user. You don't have to leave X/Kde. Just do it from a terminal.

I'll give this a shot.

Unfortunately the docs from XFree86 contains a wrong example how to setup a 7 buttons mouse, so all buttons work as expected. This document tries to give and explain a working configuration.
That came from that website, hah. Even xfree85 is confused.

lol ^^^ - a program that may help you is 'xev' - just run it and it'll fire up a little window which you can test all your buttons
