His issue was that it would halt, but not reboot.
I understood this, but perhaps I did not articulate sufficiently. All I know is that I use 2.4.31 and I can reboot, halt, or power off with that kernel. And yes, of course I had to uncomment the modprobe line in rc.modules, but that was all I needed to do.

I totally disagree with this, Woodsman.
My fault for not articulating better! I only meant that with respect to general advice about many configuration issues that the response to recompile the kernel is often an ill-advised but a popular response. With respect to ACPI, recompiling might be necessary for some users, but because I never have used ACPI (only APM), I probably should not comment on that.

. . .because the vanilla version installed with Slackware CANNOT take into account all the different combinations of cards/BIOS/monitors etc.
I'll play devil's advocate here. I notice many other distro vendors seem to have few or issues with auto detection and installation. A common statement here at the Slackware LQ forum with respect to APM and ACPI is that the user experienced no issues or problems with other distros. Indeed, the OP of this thread wrote much the same.

Quote:
A recompile is not a big deal.
Depends upon one's experience and priorities. Any experienced person could utter that same statement with respect to their profession, vocation, or hobby. My first attempts at recompiling failed. And failed. And failed. Eventually I succeeded. I still do not consider myself an expert at recompiling a kernel, however.

Additionally, many people do not want to spend time tinkering---even if they possess the knowledge and experience. They just want to use their computers. Tinkering is fine for many people, but many people do not want to travel that path. Nor should they be required. I have been around computers for a long time and although I possess sufficient experience to punch my way out of many paper bags, often I prefer not to. I prefer to use my computers rather than tinker with them. Many other people are much the same.

Quote:
Sometimes, you just have to recompile the kernel. Which is what fixed the OP's problem
Which I still find curious because I did not need to recompile the stock Slackware 2.4.31 kernel to support APM. Yes, obviously the OP needed to do that, although I would like to know the root cause of why the stock 2.4.31 and APM would not work on his box but works fine on mine. I will assume the stock 2.4.31 works fine on many boxes considering the lack of forum threads about APM where recompiling the kernel was the only solution.

Quote:
So a blanket statement like "you don't need to recompile the kernel" is not only wrong, but also misleading
As I just explained, perhaps I could have articulated my context better, but I nonetheless stand by my intent. Recompiling is not always necessary to solve many (most?) configuration issues and IMO is a "blanket" cop-out response.

Hi,

Here! Here!

Well stated and as I stated in a previous post, you don't always need to re-compile. Find out what is actually going on before you jump to another path!

What is the issue?

shutdown -h now

Turns the PC off, always has here, regardless of the kernel.

shutdown -r now

Reboots. What doesn't work?
