shutdown with GDK 2.6

i just install slackware 10. My problem is that by default X doesn't start. So i have to log in as root from command line and then type kdm or gdm. (how do i automate it to directly go to my login screen?). I am presented with a graphical login screen and I have to again login in. If I try to start kdm or gdm while logged in as any user then it say "only root wants to run kdm/gdm" . after I'm done using Gnome I cannot shutdown from gdm (I'm using Gnome 2.6)? I log out and there still isn't any shutdown option. (I tried ctrl+alt+bkspace too - didn't work)
how do i make X start automatically and how do i shutdown from gnome?
