shutdown problem
I have slackware 10 installed on my old p3 machine. It was working fine. but now there are two problems:
1. the sound is unreliable. Sometimes I can play music files. ANd other times I cannot. So I do a restart and the sound is back on. 2. Whenever I do a shutdown. (either through menu pr with shutdown -h now) it reaches the stage where it says powerdown (- but it doesnt' say -- it is safe to turn off your comptuer) it used to automatically shut the computer, but now I have to press the powerbutton , which results in the computer restarting. any solutions? thanks |
1) When it starts to be unrealiabe? It just simply happens?
2) You said, "it used to" what do you mean? did you changed your kernel? Try modprobe apm |

it just simply happens. one time i boot in the sound is working, next time i boot the sound is not working. This has led me to do the following. Whenever i start and login, the first thing i do is go to the control center (KDE) and check the sound settings. if the sound card seems to tbe workign then I start my other work. Other wise I restart and do the same process till i get the sound working. 2) You said, "it used to" what do you mean? did you changed your kernel? Try modprobe apm No i haven't changed my kernel. the only thing i've done is add install instead of lilo, and add dropline gnome. It used to shutdown fine a couple of days before. |
hi,
remove the " # " before " modprobe apm " in "your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules" . that will really power-down. and for your sound: as it's an oldy remove the card and clean the contacts. egag |
I have had similar problems with soundcards when the DMA wasn't being set properly in "rc.modules".
