Shutdown completely

I used to have SuSE. When I used poweroff, the power would turn off. I recently installed Slackware on the same computer, and yet when I execute poweroff (or shutdown from the log off option which appears now that I set it up to use the KDE Login Manager in the default run level) it doesn't turn off completely. It goes through the usual halt process and just stops when it gets to Power Down. or whatever that last message is. It doesn't actually turn off the computer. How would I set it up to turn it off completely?

Thank you.

I have to load the APM module for my Slackware box to power off completely.

You can install the apmd package (it's in the "a" series) and the APM module will be loaded at boot time (at least that's how it works in Slackware 9.0).

A question.. I don't have ATX power supply, so I always have to use the power button to turn off the box. I have apm loaded at boot time, so DO I need it really? Should I turn off that apm if I can't use it?
