Shouldn't Slack skip the "Unlucky 13" and go directly to 14 ?

Maybe we shouldn't have a Slackware version 13....

As the poet said: "Yo no creo en las brujas, pero que las hay, las hay" (I don't believe in witches, but there are witches indeed.)

What do you think?

What difference does it make? Pat can call it anything he wishes. Slackware 13.0 is just fine wth me. I'm looking forward to Slackware 13.0 and Slackware64!

foodown 06-06-2009 06:37 PM

Being as how 13013 is the "Mark of Dobbs," and, of course, April 13 is "St. Bill Hicks' Day" for slackers everywhere, I doubt that Pat is too worried about the number 13 as "unlucky."

sahko 06-06-2009 07:01 PM

13 is my lucky number :)

chess 06-06-2009 10:46 PM

I think it should be Slackware 13.666

I was about to suggest that too. :)

lumak 06-07-2009 01:48 AM

How about Slackware B, or something, so that slackware can have an incomprehensible code name like all the other OSes... I mean what if slackware had version numbers that used letters that looked like the numbers?

I
Z
E
h
S
a
L
B
P
IO
II
IZ
IE

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We really are at an unholy number!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Surly we must skip this and be at version Ih.

noctilucent 06-07-2009 01:59 AM

No.

everal 06-07-2009 02:29 AM

If we go from version 12 to version 17, we could have the Slack 17.01, and after that the Slack 1701-C, 1701-E what about that?

lumak 06-07-2009 02:38 AM

Wouldn't it be Slackenprise BOB-1701-C??

sycamorex 06-07-2009 02:44 AM

Let's forget about numbers. What about:
Slackware Reloaded
Slackware's Baby
Slackware Returns
The Silence of The Slackers
The Slack Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
From Pat with Love
Goldslacker (aka Slackfinger)
My X never dies

kingbeowulf 06-07-2009 02:48 AM

Numerical superstitions are for the weak minded followers of silly religions

samac 06-07-2009 03:12 AM

triscadecaphobes of the world unite and crush the silly triscadecaphiles. We can then have a world without the unholy, accursed number that is 12+1.

Nah only joking!

13 is good for me, but surely it will be 13.0

samac

EDIT curiously this is post 13 hmmmm! I smell a conspiracy.

sycamorex 06-07-2009 03:15 AM

If we do need to stick to numbers, I'm looking forward to Slackware 42 - It'll be the answer.

samac 06-07-2009 03:15 AM

Or Slackware 1101.0

samac

gargamel 06-07-2009 03:30 AM

There's one silly religion that's relevant here though: the Church of the Subgenius.

What does the Church of the Subgenius think the number 13?

(Not a rhetorical question. I'm just too lazy to look it up).

By the way: what do you get if you multiply six by nine? 42 [in base 13]. The truth is out there.

brianL 06-07-2009 05:24 AM

I was born on the 13th (of May), there are 13 letters in my name, and if you stick the 1 and the 3 together you get B. Plus the already mentioned connections with The Church Of The SubGenius. That makes 13 OK by me.

/dev/me 06-07-2009 05:32 AM

Wait just a minute, there was a FAQ entry about skipping version numbers *looks* jup, here it is ;)

Hmmmm, that's not what I'd call a very solid promise. What's with the other distro's? Are they nearing version 13 yet? (whoehahaha, I think not!)
We might even go to version 12.3, 12.4, 12.5 etc so others have the chance to catch up. Cut 'em some slack, so to speak :p But considering 'superstition bringeth bad luck', maybe we should just make the jump to #13 and come tide or high water, just stick with it.

Shall I ask the famous question that has proven so many times to be the final utterance of the overconfident?? "Slackware 13! What's the worst that could happen?"

I'm voting for one of those silly alliteration distribution names:

* Slackware Bouncing Bobby
* Slackware Buttering Bob
* Slackware Subversive Subgenius
* Slackware Pampering Patrick

Something like that.

vinegaroon 06-07-2009 05:55 AM

I really think Slackware needs a large version boost - Mandriva is already at version 2009. We don't want to look obsolete.

Good point. Current marketting trends would suggest that the following might make a good name.

"Slackware 3000 Pro - Ultimate edition PLUS, with OpenSource Technology"

But should it not be:

Ultimate edition PLUS, now with enhanced OpenSource Synergy Technology

saulgoode 06-07-2009 06:41 AM

It's bad luck to believe in superstition.

brianL 06-07-2009 06:43 AM

Ah, but Slackware 3000 would make it Slackware Millennium Edition.

Then Pat would have to answer the question whether Slackware 3000 is Year 3000 compliant (as it took place here )

brianL 06-07-2009 07:03 AM

Anyway, I think "Millennium Edition" has been used already by some obscure 3rd rate software company.

If you’re superstitious think of Slackware 13 as Slackware D, Slackware 15, or even Slackware 1101.

In the Slackware history there was the case when Slackware skipped from version 4.0 to 7.0.

niels.horn 06-07-2009 07:50 AM

How about Slackware 5.0? It has never been released before :p

I vote for Slackware 5.0! I demand an operating system without holes :)

Yes, Patrick should fill in the gaps.
So what if it confuses people when they're told to upgrade from 12.2 to 5? :)

Once I've gone through the process of configuring slackware, nothing will confuse me, LOL

khronosschoty 06-07-2009 11:50 AM

I think we should have Slackware 13 with some errie dark Halloween Sub Genius theme.

onebuck 06-07-2009 11:51 AM

Hi,

Slackware 13.0 is still Slackware! Whatever PV decides to release as we are still getting some Slack. :)

sycamorex 06-07-2009 11:59 AM

I haven't checked the slackware website, but does it actually say anywhere that it's going to be 13.0? You remember the lengthy thread about the need for slackware 64. None of the slackware guys spilled the beans:)

Ilgar 06-07-2009 12:06 PM

The official store is taking pre-orders for 13.0.

I've found 13 to be more lucky than unlucky. Friday 13, is especially lucky.

BTW, I don't believe in luck or superstition and neither should you, if you do, watch this:

Jeebizz 06-07-2009 01:05 PM

If by any chance this coming version does happen to come out on April 13, then I think that on the front of the disc, there should be a Bob Dobbs design, and the disc should be a DVD9 dual layer disc. Layer1, Slackware Linux, and layer2, the Subgenius movie Arise! (A DVD-Video/DVD-ROM) It would be a Slackware/Church of the Subgenius Special edition version of Slackware. That would be really cool!

brianL 06-07-2009 01:44 PM

When thirteen is reached by Slack,
The Elder Gods are coming back.

everal 06-07-2009 01:55 PM

So long we have, to beat the Ghost in the Machine:

1 - Slackware 1701-C (letters and numbers and movies)

2- Slackware 5 (funny to see people's face trying to upgrade from 12.2 to 5!)

3- Slackware 13013 "Bob" Edition with "The Real Truth Inside" and a bonus DVD

4- Slackware 3000 Plus Enhanced Trillenium Advanced Pro Edition

and,of course:

5- Slackware 42 -The Answer

:-)

sycamorex 06-07-2009 02:03 PM

According to the 13th Book of Revelation, verse 13:
Quote:

And he [Pat/Slackware] doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth...
They didn't mention it in the changelogs.

It was mentioned in the official changelog "way back" on December 2nd, 2008:

Quote:

Invasive changes like the new X (that will require changes to
xorg.conf) and merging KDE4 should probably wait for Slackware 13.0.
It was also mentioned when Slackware64-current became public on May 15th:
Quote:

... DVDs will be available for purchase from the Slackware store when Slackware 13.0 is released....
So, despite this interesting thread, I guess it will be Slackware 13.0 after all ;)

Ahem... Cough... Cough... I need to correct my own post...

After some research on older Slackware versions, I found that Slackware 5.0 was released on August 20th, 1999.

This is from the ChangeLog included with Slackware 7.0:
Code:

Fri Aug 20 17:22:50 CDT 1999
a1/hdsetup.tgz:  Added patches for cpkgtool from Ellen Geertsema to handle
packages with long names in the package removal menu.
                Added /etc/slackware-version.
Bumped version numbers to Slackware 5.0.0.
Patched CD-ROM setup menu to make "NO" the default choice
when asking if the CD-ROM should be mounted at boot time.
Enlighten the user as to why answering "YES" can be bad.
                (* Slackware 5.0.0a release *)

Now, I know that it was never released on CD, but it was an intermediate version, available for download, just like:
5.1a (Mon Aug 23 03:42:12 CDT 1999)
5.2b (Mon Aug 23 22:14:34 CDT 1999) --> a version bump in less than 24h!
5.2b (Wed Aug 25 14:20:35 CDT 1999) --> again?
6.0.0-beta (Thu Sep 2 21:31:18 CDT 1999)
6.1.0-beta (Mon Sep 6 22:17:58 CDT 1999)
6.2.0-beta (Thu Sep 9 17:45:30 CDT 1999)
6.3.0-beta (Sun Sep 19 21:53:00 CDT 1999)
6.3.1-beta (Thu Sep 23 01:26:35 CDT 1999)
6.5.0-beta (Wed Sep 29 17:58:01 CDT 1999)
6.9.0-beta (Thu Oct 7 18:43:45 CDT 1999)
6.9.1-beta (Sun Oct 10 00:27:08 CDT 1999)
and then came the 7.0.0-beta versions...

Just some funny history of Slackware :D

brianL 06-08-2009 05:11 AM

Ah, so there was no gap, no jump from 4 to 7. Another myth shattered...
