Two problems, I'll list them (not hoping to solve them both though):
1. ALSA doesn't work. Sound playback is awful. It sounds like a scratched disk. When I run alsaconf it detects "atiixp unknown device". When I look at my motherboards user manual, I find it to be the southbridge chipset, and my audio codec is "RealTek ALC655".
2. CUPS neither, I have an HP LaserJet 1000 printer (USB), followed all the steps al hp.com, downloaded all drivers, followed advice at linuxprinting.org, doesn't work.
b) A bit more input on the printer problem, please. Does the box
have USB support (check lsmod) enabled at all? Does the
printer show in dmesg after having been plugged in?

Check your kernel configuration. I'd be willing to bet that you have uhci enabled, If you're at my level of (in)expertise, this means you'll have to recompile your kernel, although I BELIEVE that I read somewhere on LQ that it's possible to get away with just enabling module support for ohci, then remaking and installing the modules. Of course, it's also possible that I may be talking out of my butt here; it's happened before. I am unable to find corroborating evidence one way or the other at the moment, but I am fairly certain that's what I read.
