Setup Sound
I've got an ASUS M2A-VM mobo with integrated ALC883 sound. I'm running Slackware13.37; I've checked out the TLDP and the forums but can't make any headway. Any ideas?

Have a look at this thread. It seems to have helped the OP.

Well, the command is alsaconf
As far as I can see the modules are loaded. You may execute "alsamixer" in a terminal (as a normal user) and look if the "master" isn't on 0 (zero). Markus |
Okay, ran "alsaconf" this time as it should be and went through the configurator. Still no sound though. Alsamixer shows my card to be ATI HDA Intel with a chipset RealTeK ALC883. With Mixer, I have the option of selecting the HDA Intel soundcard or RealTek ALC883 (OSS) so...I'm really not sure.
|
I would try the hda_intel at first, if it doesn't work you can execute alsaconf again.
Markus |
alsaconf is automated. I have to select HDA Intel
|
Could you please post a screenshot of your alsamixer-settings?

You should move the buttons for surround and so on to maximum.
Curser to the left/right will move to the button and the up/down-cursors will change the settins, try everything out. Markus |
Yea, even with everything max'ed, there's still no sound.
|
Which loudspeaker-device do you have? Which Windowmanager are you using?
Markus |
I'm using the speakers built-in to my ViewSonic monitor. I'm unsure about Windowmanager.
|
Well, have you connected the cable between the monitor and your soundcard, or if you're also runnig Windows, does the sound work with Windows?
Markus |
Yes, I've connected the speakers. The sound was working with Windows, but I don't have it anymore. Threw a brick through 'em!
|
There is one thing I remember.... Do you have the stock Slackware-kernel or did you build it by yourself?
And again the question about your Windowmanager. Do you work with a GUI? i.e. did you "startx" or do you boot into a GUI? or do you work in a virtual terminal? The Windowmanager is set in Slackware with the xwmconfig command. Afterwards when starting X the selected Windowmanager is used. Normally it would be KDE, but there are several others. Which programm did you use whe you checked your sound? Markus |
It's the stock kernel-v2.6.37.6. Yes, sorry, I use Xfce. I tried playing a Cd with Audacious and checked some videos on youtube.
|
As far as I know there are also Menus in XFCE where one configure the sound, did you try that?
I've reported this thread to be moved to the Slackware-forum here at LQ, I don't have much ideas what to try to get your sound working. Markus |
Okay, thanks.
|
Moved: This thread is more suitable in <SLACKWARE> and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.
|
Well I read through Slackbook and am no less confused.

Hi Barclay, I have a ALC889A and had some trouble with my audio too. I had to create a text in "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" with my HD audio model.
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=MODEL |
Hmm...I tried what you suggested powerball; and I also found the Realtek drivers page so I downloaded that, installed it and rebooted. Before the reboot my KMix program showed the device as Realtek ALC883 but there was still no sound so I thought I should reboot. Afterwards, KMix shows HDA_ATI SB as the device. I opened Mixer and it allowed me to select Realtek ALC833(OSS)? but KMix still only shows HDA_ATI SB.
|
Possibly the HDA_ATI SB refers to your graphics-adapter. Do you have HDMI?
Markus |
No, I believe it is High Def Audio, ATI being the brand, not certain though.
