Sounds like a problem with your hardware clock. Check your BIOS to see if it's clock is set right.

If it is, add this line to rc.local: hwclock --hctosys

Then it'll get set on bootup.

IT is possible that your Main Board battery is dead. Check and change it. DO NOT let it leak.

i used red hat a while ago and there was an option of syncronizing the clock with the UTC. then you chose what server you wanted to use. is there something like that in slackware? i think that is the poblem because windows has the right time and date. i also tried adding that line and it didnt wok

How does one go about setting the time in Slackware? When I first installed Slackware (newbie with this distro, not with Linux) I picked Central (USA) but my clock is off. It not my battery. Keeps time with other distros. So how does one go about setting the time?

You need ntp. Here is a link from the system admin guide on tldp:
http://tldp.org/LDP/sag/html/x2869.html
With the information above and the list of time servers below:
http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2b.html
You should be set.
Please pay attention to the access policy of the time servers.

Try the following command:
Code:
$ netdate 129.6.15.28 132.163.4.102 131.107.1.10 207.200.81.113
That command uses a couple of servers, some of which may be down. Not to worry though, even if only one is up, it'll still work.

Take a look at http://www.loblolly.net/~rddecker/he...-twoclocks.htm as well.

If the netdate command works (i.e. if your clock is set to the correct time by it), you may want to add the following line to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:
Code:
/usr/sbin/netdate 129.6.15.28 132.163.4.102 131.107.1.10 207.200.81.113
Hope that helps!!!

You could also use ntpdate to synch with a clock or run ntpd to keep it synched. I prefer to have ntpdate run as a cron job but I suppose it is a matter of choice.
