Setting Permissions
 

Im new to slackware , comming from mandrake 8.1, all the right permissions were set automactically in mandrake. I want a user account that can read and write to almost any file but the boot lilo files, How would i set this up? Im the only one that uses my computer and id use root all the time if i could get on irc with it, but i cant. Im having trouble compiling sources under my user account, i have to be root to install anything. Ive spent 8 hours trying to get xchat GUI irc client to run as a user. I get "Permission Denied" on almost everything. I want to be practically root but logged in as a user. Is this possible? I added my user account to group "root" and now i cant "startx" , i get a error I "unknowncommand". I know this maybe sound dumb to some of you, but being the only one that uses this computer i feel like my computer is using me. Hope someone out there can help :(

I don't see how it differs from being just root? You might take a look at sudo.

Slackware is designed with security in mind, if you create a user you do not want them to have almost root permissions and then try to limit them. It is best to be restrictive and then grant them access.

Try changing your group ID to 0, this will most likely not allow you to write everywhere but is more then just a reg users. In slackware you most be root to install packages, but then after that you should be able to run the commands and connect to IRC, I have not problems.
