If the module was part of the kernel source, where did the firmware come from? Could it be a different version?. Go to the linux kernel source directory and read Documentation/networking/README.ipw2100 if you haven't already, it seems pretty useful.
Looking at the above kernel docs readme, you could try loading the module with the debugging flag, but it seems to take some horribly large range of hexadecimal numbers as an argument (the example is 'modprobe ipw2100 debug=1024').
